Job description

Athabasca University's Learning Services Tutorial Department is seeking a temporaryIndividualized Study Tutorfor the following courseending January 2026:

Environmental Studies/Global Studies 343 - Global Environmental Change

Qualifications and Experience Required: A doctoral degree with an interdisciplinary background in disciplines such as, but not exclusive to, environmental studies, global studies, environmental education, environmental history, eco-criticism, eco-tourism, natural resource management, environmental politics, and environmental sociology. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a critical social science perspective emphasizing empowerment, emancipation, decolonization, inclusion and justice, as well as an interdisciplinary, integrative orientation to topics associated with socioecological sustainability, regeneration and transition.

Along with the relevant disciplinary credentials as mentioned above, the position requires someone who loves to teach and is open to learning and creatively using a student-centered assessment structure. The tutor for these courses will undertake minimal marking and instead use most of their paid tutor time providing formative ungraded feedback as a means of empowering students to learn how they learn and support them individually in learning the course materials.

Teaching experience at a post-secondary level is required. Experience in distance learning and familiarity with digital teaching technologies and online course delivery is preferred. Experience with adult education, alternative assessment methods like ungrading and online course delivery is considered an asset.

Along with the relevant academic credentials as mentioned above, this position requires excellent communication, organizational, administration and online/computer skills. The successful candidate should have demonstrated ability to maintain a high academic standard, maintain accurate student records, and return students' work promptly and communications within the University's required service standards. Candidates must own or have access to a computer and internet with the capability to communicate with the University and students and the capability to run any applications required to perform tutorial support. Non-doctoral prepared employees: $243.25 prorated per block, per biweekly pay and/or $31.01 per hour.

Doctoral prepared employees: $252.98 prorated per block, per biweekly pay and/or $32.24 per hour.
