TRIUMF, located on the UBC campus in Vancouver, is seeking eager and passionate Indigenous students for its research internship program. Participants will engage in cutting-edge projects under the guidance of experienced researchers, gaining valuable hands-on experience in particle and nuclear physics.
With a salary ranging from $2,815 to $4,238 per month and travel support for students outside Vancouver, this opportunity empowers candidates to thrive in a collaborative environment, contributing to significant scientific discoveries.
Discover TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre, and one of the world’s leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. TRIUMF’s diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.
TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines. It offers young minds a chance to gather, learn, make new friends, and have fun during their time at TRIUMF. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students covering conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening, and weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF.
Located on the UBC campus, the program makes it easier for students to make friends, create memories, and explore Vancouver while working at TRIUMF.
The successful candidate will choose from the selected list of research projects below, which are part of the TRIUMF student programme. Each supervisor has undergone mandatory Indigenous Awareness and Cultural Sensitivity Training.
To be eligible for this award, students must:

TRIUMF’s CRONOS facility focuses on developing superconducting cryogenic quantum sensors for particle physics. The candidate will work directly with new technologies and participate in the operation of the dilution fridge. Sensors operate at ultra‑high vacuum (10‑8 mbar) and extremely low temperatures (~20 mK).
During the program, the group is expected to operate Be‑EST devices—Beryllium Electron‑capture in Superconducting Tunneling‑junctions—a world‑leading technique for beyond‑the‑standard‑model neutrino physics and quantum properties of weak decay using radioactive beryllium atoms embedded into thin‑film superconducting quantum sensors.
Cancer is a leading cause of death in Canada. Targeted Radionuclide Therapy (TRT) uses alpha‑emitting radionuclides such as Actinium‑225. The student will explore designs of a Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imager based on a Compton Camera principle and apply AI‑based techniques for optimizing detector concept and image reconstruction quality.
TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, is situated on the south campus of the University of British Columbia within the Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver, BC.
Applicants should be passionate about science, engineering, and technology, driven to excel, and eager to be part of a collaborative and forward‑thinking organization.
Salary commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, ranging from $2,815 to $4,238 per month, including 4 % vacation pay. Competitive total rewards package and comprehensive benefits.
TRIUMF offers help with travel costs for students outside the Vancouver area.
