Job summary

Baldonnel Elementary is seeking an Indigenous Student Support Worker Replacement Step #2 to assist teachers with the educational, social/emotional and cultural needs of Indigenous students. The role supports students’ culture and academic success while working both independently and with staff.

The position requires collaboration with the District Indigenous Education Office, a start date of September 8, 2026, and a base schedule of ten months per year at 15 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalency.
  • 1 year of training and/or recent experience (within 5 years) working with Indigenous people would be an asset.
  • Access to a reliable mode of transportation.
  • Ability to work independently and set priorities.
  • WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment.
  • Proven knowledge and experience with Indigenous culture is a requirement.
  • Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry (per Human Rights Variance). Proof of ancestry is required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and maintain Indigenous student self-identification forms to ensure audit compliance.
  • Reports to site Administrative Officers and District Indigenous Principal.
  • Create weekly/bi-weekly/monthly schedules for Indigenous students.
  • Maintain accurate student records as directed by the District Indigenous Principal.
  • Monitor and support Indigenous students and families; liaison with Indigenous communities.
  • Attend ISSW meetings as requested.
  • Attend directed professional development in-services.
  • Provide academic support for Indigenous students through in-class assistance.
  • Provide relevant student information for School Based Team meetings.
  • Provide an Indigenous perspective to all students and staff; connect to resources and organize culturally relevant experiences.

INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUPPORT WORKER - REPLACEMENT STEP #2
Position Description

There is a position available for an Indigenous Student Support Worker Replacement Step #2 at Baldonnel Elementary. Reporting to the site Administrative Officer(s) and the District Administrative Officer Indigenous Education, the Indigenous Student Support Worker provides assistance to teachers and otherstaff in attending to the educational,social/emotional and cultural needs of Indigenous students. They also assist in identifying and addressing situationswhich affect students. The role of theIndigenous Student Support Worker (ISSW) is to provide identified Indigenous students with opportunities to enhance their cultural,emotional, and social well-being while ensuring their academic success. The ISSW musthave the ability to workindependently, and collaboratively, with teachers and the Indigenous Education Centre staff. ISSW's responsibilities vary according to the students' and school needs but with the ultimateobjective of assisting students in order to fostereducational success.

Hours of work: (15) hrs per week

Duties to Commence: September 8, 2026, until the return of the incumbent

Work Year Base: Ten (10) months per year

Commencing Salary : $27.30/hr.

Duties:
  • Collect and maintain Indigenous student self-identification and parent consent forms (1701s) to ensure audit compliance.
  • Reports directly to their siteAdministrativeOfficer(s) and District IndigenousPrincipal.
  • In cooperationwith he site Administrative Officer(s), and the District Indigenous Principal, creates a weekly/bi-weekly/monthlyschedule for workingwith their Indigenous students.
  • Maintain accurate andcomprehensive student records as directedby the District Indigenous Principal.
  • Monitors and provides support to Indigenous students andtheirfamilies, as well as being the liaisonbetween the school and the Indigenous communities within their assigned school catchment.
  • Attend ISSW meetings as requested by the District Indigenous Principal.
  • Attend directed professionaldevelopment in-services.
  • Providingacademic support for Indigenous students',educational programmingthrough in-class assistance asappropriate either individually, small group or classroom.
  • Providing relevant student information for School Based Teammeetings.
  • Provide an Indigenous perspectiveto all students and staff at their assigned school(s) such as:
    • Connecting school and staff to resources.
    • Enhancing school and staffunderstanding of Indigenousworldview and perspectives.
    • ISSW may be called upon to act as sguest speaker to supplement lessons.
    • Organize and facilitate culturallyrelevant experiences for students both inthe school and in the community.
    • Providing support for Indigenous students' cultural growth asappropriate either individually, as a small group, or as a whole class activity.
  • Assumes otherresponsibilities that are site and program specific.
  • When requestedby the site Administrative Officer(s) or District Principal of Indigenous Education, conduct home visits.
  • By their presence the ISSW must be a positive Indigenous role model for students, staff and community.
  • May be required to attend off site/overnight school activities.
  • Other job related tasks as directed.
