Job description

In keeping with the goals of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), only applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis will be considered for this position.

General

Reporting to the Manager of School and Public Programs, the Indigenous Learning and Engagement Producer designs, delivers, and evaluates learning and engagement activities. The incumbent’s responsibilities are split between learning program delivery and the development of new and innovative learning programs inspired by the collections, stories, and exhibitions in the Museum Galleries. This role is supported by the Head of Indigenous Programming and Engagement, the curatorial team, and colleagues from across the Museum. T hey will have experience working in collaborative teams, experience developing and delivering educational programming for various audiences, and knowledge of Indigenous histories and cultures.

This positionisfull-time (35 hours) and will require some evening and weekend work. Work hours may change depending on seasonal departmental activities and special events/programs.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Priority 1: Indigenous Learning Program Production, Renewal, and Coordination (50%)

The Indigenous Learning and Engagement Producer will develop, deliver, and train others to deliver Museum learning activities for diverse audiences. They will work within the greater Learning & Engagement Team to identify areas of need and will be expected to respond to evolving priorities with energy, agility, and creativity. Programs supported through this role explore topics including, but not limited to, the HBC Royal Charter, the fur trade, Indigenous trade and diplomatic networks, treaty-making, land stewardship, and colonial systems and their impacts. Programming balances critical engagement with colonial histories alongside recognition of Indigenous ingenuity, innovation, resilience, and enduring contributions to society.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, deliver, and evaluate formal and informal learning programs for school and public audiences, in consultation with the Manager of School and Public Programs and supported by the Head of Indigenous Programming and Engagement and the curatorial and Learning & Engagement teams.
  • Together with the Head of Indigenous Programming and Engagement, collaborate and research with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, educators, and community partners to ensure program content remains accurate, relevant, and responsive.
  • Promote the institution’s programs and assist with or lead outreach, marketing, and audience development, in collaboration with relevant Museum staff.
  • Gather and share feedback from visitors, volunteers, staff, and community partners to support continuous improvement and inform institutional decision-making.

Priority 2: Learning Program Delivery, Maintenance, and Support (50%)

The Indigenous Learning and Engagement Producer plays a key role in the day-to-day delivery and maintenance of learning programs, ensuring high-quality, consistent, and meaningful visitor experiences. Through direct engagement with diverse audiences, the incumbent supports learning that encourages reflection, dialogue, and understanding while centering Indigenous strength, continuity, and lived experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take a leadership role in daily program operations and logistics.
  • Deliver booked interpretive programs for school and public audiences, both in-person and online.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public regarding programs, exhibitions, and learning opportunities, providing clear and welcoming information.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of departmental programs, permanent galleries, and temporary exhibitions as required.
  • Set up and take down furniture, equipment, artifacts, and program materials; operate A/V and digital technologies (e.g., Zoom, Teams, mobile filming equipment) as required for program delivery.
  • Monitor inventory and ensure sufficient supplies and materials are available for ongoing program delivery.
  • Train, mentor, and support new staff, interns, and volunteers, modelling respectful and effective engagement.
  • Support and liaise with events and rentals staff for programs and special events.

Priority 3: Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, cultures, histories, and contemporary realities, including an understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems, worldviews, and ways of learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning program development processes and techniques for a range of audiences, including schools, families, youth, and adults, with the ability to adapt content for diverse learning styles.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, which include the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with community members, staff, volunteers, educators, students, and the general public.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, including the ability to deliver programs and demonstrations confidently, clearly, and enthusiastically to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to conduct research at an advanced level and apply findings to the development of programs for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding educational trends related to learning, outreach, engagement, and Indigenous-led or community-informed practice.
  • Experience delivering programs via digital platforms, troubleshooting online A/V equipment, and familiarity with filming and editing video content is an asset.
  • Wide knowledge of Canadian history, with a focus on Manitoba communities and history.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Experience working with or alongside Indigenous communities, organizations, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, educators, or youth, in professional, educational, or community contexts.
  • University degree in a relevant field such as Indigenous Studies, History, Museum Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Education, or a related discipline, with coursework or demonstrated learning related to Indigenous Peoples, histories, cultures, or community-based knowledge, and/or the human or natural history of Manitoba.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a similar role, such as developing and delivering learning programs and working with diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language(s) of Manitoba is an asset.

An equivalent combination of education, training, lived experience, and professional experience will be considered.

This is a full-time permanent position effective October 2026. A vailability on weekdays and weekend evenings, as well as during the day on weekends, is required . The salary range is $46,218.29 to $58,480.87 per annum (Pay Group 4) depending on qualifications and experience.
