Job summary

Nusdeh Whesulh Elementary School in Quesnel, BC, seeks a caring teacher to lead Kindergarten to Grade 3, delivering the BC curriculum through an inclusive, culturally grounded, land-connected approach with a supportive team.

You will collaborate with child development support workers, Elders, and family support staff; foster trauma-informed, protective classrooms; and help build a new Indigenous led school from its first year.

Qualifications

  • BC Ministry of Education and Child Care teaching certification, or eligibility for certification to teach in a BC independent school.
  • Experience in inclusive education, including supporting children with higher needs and diverse learning profiles.
  • Experience working with vulnerable children and families, such as children affected by violence in the home or children in care and transitioning from care.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed practice and strengths based approaches.
  • Understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultures, histories, and ways of knowing, and a commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Strong relational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector)

Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver, and assess Kindergarten to Grade 3 instruction that follows the BC curriculum and the Binygunchagh Deyen philosophy of the school
  • Create a safe, predictable, trauma informed classroom where every child belongs
  • Develop and carry out inclusive education plans (IEPs) and adaptations for learners with diverse and higher support needs
  • Bring land based learning, Indigenous knowledge, language, and culture into daily teaching
  • Build trusting relationships with families and caregivers, including families receiving parenting supports
  • Work with support workers, Elders, and community partners as part of a wraparound care team
  • Track and share student progress with families in a strengths based way
  • Uphold student safety, confidentiality, and duty to report obligations
