Job description

The Algoma District School Board invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Indigenous Education and Community Liaison Lead.

Summary

Reporting to the Superintendent of Equity, Reconciliation and Well-Being, the Indigenous Education and Community Liaison Lead will work collaboratively to manage, plan, develop, implement and monitor Indigenous education programs and initiatives. The Lead will work closely with the Superintendent, Board and school staff, and the ADSB Indigenous Education Advisory Council to continue, review and initiate efforts to support improved student achievement and well-being among Indigenous students, and to close the achievement gap between Indigenous students and all students. The Lead will manage the Four Directions Indigenous Graduation Coach program. This position has system-wide responsibilities and will be based at the Education Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the Four Directions Indigenous Graduation Coach Program, including the management of Indigenous Graduation Coaches and coordination of community resources to support the program.
  • Facilitate and lead problem solving meetings with Principal, Indigenous Graduation Coaches, and community workers.
  • Oversee the Indigenous Education Board Action Plan, including the management of associated budgets.
  • Manage the completion and implementation of the annual Indigenous Education Board Action Plan in support of Indigenous Student Achievement and Well-Being and annual reporting to the Ministry of Education.
  • Gather, maintain and utilize confidential school and system-level data to monitor progress towards implementation of the Indigenous Education Board Action Plan and other Indigenous student achievement and well-being indicator data.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Anishinaabemowin and Indigenous Studies programs, including recruiting, hiring, retaining and mentoring elementary and secondary Anishinaabemowin Teachers.
  • Facilitate pre-meetings and co-lead negotiations for First Nation Education Service Agreements, and facilitate, update and maintain Memorandum of Understanding agreements with Indigenous community partners.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and lead regular collaborative meetings, engagement sessions, events, and planning initiatives with First Nation community partners, students and families.
  • Provide leadership to the ongoing development of the ADSB Indigenous Education Program and the goals of Reconciliation in Education.
  • Collaborate with staff in the development, implementation and provision of effective professional learning opportunities in response to the needs of ADSB staff and students.
  • Work alongside ADSB staff in re-engaging and transitioning return to school for at-risk Indigenous youth.
  • Mentor and collaborate with Indigenous students and school staff in amplifying Indigenous student voice.

Qualifications

  • Candidates will possess a four-year university degree with an Indigenous education, youth, community, social, legal, or political focus.
  • Five years’ experience working with an Indigenous community or related organization, with a focus on Indigenous education, youth development, or community development.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in education and community settings.
  • Have experience living in Indigenous communities (First Nation, Métis or Inuit) and in working with Indigenous community partners in an employment or professional voluntary capacity.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures and perspectives, and Truth and Reconciliation demonstrated through work experience or professional voluntary community service.
  • Familiarity with Ontario’s education system and the Indigenous Education Strategy, including the Ontario First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework demonstrated through work experience or professional voluntary community service.

This permanent position works 35 hours per week between the hours of 8 : 30 to 4 : 30 , or as otherwise determined by the Board to meet operational needs.
