The Indigenous Education Department is seeking applications for the 1.0 Limited Duration Contract position-Indigenous Social Worker

Position Description

The Indigenous Social Worker is an itinerant position which functions as part of a multi-disciplinary Team. The primary role of the Social Worker is to enhance the educational, social and cultural functioning of Indigenous students within the School District. The Social Worker will provide support using a holistic approach encompassing the physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs of Indigenous children.

Position Responsibilities

  • Consult and collaborate with school and district staff in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of culturally sensitive intervention measures.
  • Maintain regular contact with the Director of Indigenous Education and/or their designate for the purpose of affecting a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Provide consultation and advocacy for parents on issues relating to their child’s social emotional and academic needs.
  • Provide counseling support for Indigenous students.
  • Provide written reports to school based administrators and Social Worker Coordinator on formal casework.
  • Make referrals to other school district professionals and outside agencies.
  • Liaise with MCFD (Ministry for Children and Families Development), Health Authorities, RCMP, Social agencies, Community service organizations, and First Nation/Band representatives.
  • Provide consultation and professional development opportunities for teachers, administrators, and parents regarding social work practices, community support services, Indigenous culture, history, and social issues.
  • Facilitate in-service related to Social Work.
  • Maintain copies of confidential information and data.
  • Attend meetings as requested by the Director of Indigenous Education and/or their designate.
  • Maintain a caseload identified through referral and consent process.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Specific knowledge in the area of needs and risk assessments, family dynamics, residential school and the impact of trauma.
  • Knowledge of case management, case conferencing and intervention theories and practices.
  • Ability to respond or assist in emergency situations and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings.
  • Understanding of crisis management and the ability to deal with life threatening situations including the preventions of suicide
  • Management of caseloads, time management and reporting deadlines.
  • Frequent daily travel between schools is required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement for an Indigenous Social Worker:

  • Bachelor of Social Work degree.

Desirable Requirement For An Indigenous Social Worker

  • Indigenous ancestry preferred;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years social work experience;
  • Ability to work with Indigenous children and their families; and
  • Knowledge of local Indigenous culture, customs, and beliefs
