The Indigenous Curatorial Assistant (ICA) reports directly to Director/Curator, Josephine Mills. The ICA will work on several Gallery research and collections projects focused on expanding the University of Lethbridge Art Collection’s Indigenous content, and accessibility to that content. Over the summer of 2025 term, the ICA will engage in some, or all, of the tasks listed below:

Projects:

  • Assist with Apanii (Blackfoot Digital Library) research on updating material and participate in meetings associated with current and future activities. This can include trips to Blackfoot reserves to meet with community members and Elders.
  • Contribute to the UofL Art Gallery’s plans for future Indigenous exhibitions and public programs, including developing the initial plan for an exhibition from the ULethbridge Art Collection for the Helen Christou Gallery.
  • Assist with an initial site and condition survey of the Blackfoot Confederacy Circle installation in the campus common grounds, including measurements, photography, videography, and Artist research.
  • Spirit Prize: Assist with research to revise the application process for this prize for an Indigenous student artist at ULethbridge.
  • Participate in Mootookakio’ssin planning and project meetings in association with UK research partners.
  • Assist the Gallery Programs Coordinator and with the gallery Public Programs as required.

General:

  • Become proficient in the use of the Gallery’s TMS Collections database.
  • Become familiar with the University of Lethbridge Art Collection’s holding of Indigenous artworks and Artist Files, including 2D and 3D works, fabric pieces.
  • Become proficient with Ulethbridge’s Art Gallery practices and procedures for handling artworks.
  • Document Indigenous artworks in the Collection through condition reports and/or photography, together with Gallery Staff.

Hourly Wage:
$23.96 per hour

Hours of Work:

  • 35 hours per week.
  • Weekdays only for any on-campus work, usually.
  • Work-at-home hours as possible or as required & approved by the Director.

Position Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be a post-secondary undergraduate student, or recent graduate, with coursework in relevant research areas, including Indigenous Studies, Art History and Museum Studies, History, Archaeology, Anthropology, and/or Cultural studies.

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Familiarity with Blackfoot knowledge & protocols.
  • Archival research experience.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Strong relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.
