Indigenous Coordinator, College of Medicine

Primary Purpose:

The Indigenous Coordinator supports the ohpahotân | oohpaahotaan and EDI Strategies, contributing to the success and well-being of Indigenous students within the College of Medicine.

Nature of Work:

Reporting to the Manager of OVDIH and Administration & Finance at the Regina Campus, the Regina Indigenous Coordinator is part of the Office of the Vice Dean Indigenous Health (OVDIH) team. This role supports Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and initiatives, advancing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within the College of Medicine. The coordinator collaborates with stakeholders to develop programs, build relationships, and enhance Indigenous engagement, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes the personal, social, cultural, and academic success of learners across campuses. Some travel within the province may be required.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a primary contact for Indigenous students, offering guidance, mentorship, and support.
  • Develop and facilitate programs that promote Indigenous student success and well-being.
  • Foster relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and leaders.
  • Support cultural training and workshops for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ensure effective communication between Indigenous students, faculty, and support services.
  • Assist in developing policies and programs that reflect Indigenous perspectives.
  • Advocate for Indigenous students' needs within the College of Medicine.
  • Organize and participate in events celebrating Indigenous cultures and traditions.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of Indigenous support programs, recommending improvements.
Qualifications and Skills:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Education, Social Work, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Experience: 2-3 years of related experience, with experience working in an institutional environment considered an asset. Experience in diverse and inclusive settings is required.

Skills:

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and students in an academic setting.
  • Ability to build and maintain community relationships in Regina and Southern Saskatchewan.
  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and ways of knowing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and program development skills.
  • Commitment to Indigenous student success and well-being.
