The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
sxʷta:təχʷəm (Vancouver Indigenous Students Collegium) is a unique space within the First Nations House of Learning (FNHL) and UBC’s Collegia program. sxʷta:təχʷəm provides an Indigenous student lead ‘home-away-from-home’ for 1,200 plus Indigenous students. Guided by the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP) this space is a part of a commitment to promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment for Indigenous students and support them to achieve success. Indigenous students on and off campus at all levels of study are included in this space and programing to promote partnership, connection, inclusion and leadership for Indigenous students on campus. The Indigenous Collegium Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and delivery of programs and services in sxʷta:təχʷəm.

Organizational Status
Position reports to the Director of the First Nations House of Learning . The Indigenous Collegium Coordinator is expected to work in collaboration with FNHL staff, the Center for Student Development and Leadership (CSDL) team and all campus partners who work to support Indigenous students.

Work Performed

1. Recruits, trains, and supervises team of student workers which includes 10 Collegia Advisors and 3 Work Learn Students. Provides advice, guidance and overall support to ensure they are able to effectively complete their duties.

2. Works collaboratively with the Student Engagement Coordinator and Bridge Through Sports Coordinator to concurrently deliver programs and services to Indigenous students.

3. Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations for sxʷta:təχʷəm including ordering, budget tracking, management of housekeeping and maintenance of the space. Monitors sxʷta:təχʷəm program budget to ensure that expenses comply with program and UBC financial policies, procedures and requirements are met. Procures necessary goods and supplies for sxʷta:təχʷəm programs and events.

4. Manages existing relationships and develops new relationships with campus partners, stakeholders and external community partners to inform and implement sxʷta:təχʷəm programs.

5. Conduct evaluation and assessment of sxʷta:təχʷəm by collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, and communicating the outcomes and impacts of the program.

6. Develops and delivers sxʷta:təχʷəm Advisor 2 week leadership training and weekly professional development sessions for Advisor team throughout the year.

7. Supports CSDL on Jumpstart and professional development for UBC Collegia Advisors through the year.

8. Participates on cross campus committees charged with responsibility for programs or initiatives to support student engagement, representing the views and perspective of the FNHL in a thoughtful and clear way.

9. Contributes to the creation of strategies and the development of plans through establishing and initiating surveys.

10. Provides clear communication to students, staff, faculty and departments through a wide range of mediums including e-mail, web, print, phone and in-person about Indigenous student initiatives, programs and services.

11. Works collaboratively with FNHL Communication team on social media strategy and content for sxʷta:təχʷəm.

12. Works to support the FNHL Student Engagement Coordinator in the support of the FNHL Graduation (Spring and Fall graduation).

13. Collaborates with X̱wi7x̱wa Library for Kids Take Over UBC. Supports Bridge Through Sports Coordinator with Musqueam Soccer Tournament. Works closely with the Verna J Kirkness Foundation when foundation is on campus.

14. Manages confidential and sensitive information with tact, discretion and diplomacy for student staff and students, and abides by UBC privacy rules set out in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

15. Coaches and mentors student staff and student leaders to deliver student initiatives, programs and services and to enhance their career development.

16. Supports students, staff, faculty and students in the implementation and ongoing support of the Elders Program.

17. Performs other duties and takes on additional responsibilities as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position requires a sophisticated level of judgment, tact, discretion and initiative. Errors in judgment with the internal or external stakeholders could have negative impact on the First Nations House of Learning and the University, resulting in legal suits, poor public relations, financial costs or loss of credibility. Work must often meet tight deadlines and requires the incumbent to perform well under pressure. The incumbent will be expected to respond well to unexpected circumstances and exercise good independent judgment. Must demonstrate exceptional public relations and interpersonal skills in dealing with the high-profile members of Indigenous community, the university, staff and faculty, senior administrators and member of the government. Inappropriate or errant communication of sensitive issues could have a serious impact and have legal implications.

Supervision Received
This position is supervised and works under the direction of the Director of the First Nations House of Learning. Work is reviewed for achievement of University goals and soundness of advice and judgment.

Supervision Given
Manages student staff, work learn students and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

1. Deep understanding of systemic and personal barriers that under-represented and at-risk demographics of students face in accessing and pursuing postsecondary education. Strong familiarity with programs and supports to alleviate these barriers.

2. Experience working either professionally or as a student in a post-secondary environment in program development, program management. Experience coordinating complex programs including development, planning, and implementation of ideas collaboratively with stakeholder groups.

3. Exceptional communications skills, both verbal and written.

4. Ability to communicate well in an intercultural environment.

5. Proven ability to organize events and coordinate student development programs.

6. Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member.

7. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, respectful, and effective manner.

8. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.

9. A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking.

10. Ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems, and meet deadlines.

11. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve.

12. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

13. Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of Internet technologies and willingness to learn to use new systems.

14. Previous university experience or equivalent would be an asset.

15. Previous experience with supervision of student staff including hiring, training and performance management would be an asset.

16. Knowledge of the field of leadership development, career development, student development and related literature and research an asset.

17. Previous experience supporting Indigenous students with programming in an academic setting.
