Job summary

University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for an Indigenous-Centred Collections Officer to transform stewardship of archaeological and cultural belongings through Indigenous direction and collaboration. The successful candidate will guide repatriation, rematriation, and long-term stewardship, building partnerships with Indigenous Nations and communities across Ontario.

The role reports to the Department Manager and the Director of Indigenous Initiatives, with responsibilities

Qualifications

• Master's Degree or equivalent education/experience.
• 6–7 years of progress ive experience in collections management or heritage stewardship.
• Experience in Indigenous engagement and/or consultation.
• Experience navigating repatriation/rematriation processes, preferably with Indigenous communities.
• Indigenous membership or lived experience with Indigenous communities; strong cultural competency.
• Familiarity with Indigenous protocols and data sovereignty in Canada.
• Understanding of Canadian legislative frameworks related to archaeological stewardship and repatriation.
• Training or experience in museum studies, collections management, or archaeological practice; Ontario licensure preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee organization, documentation, and curation of Indigenous ancestral belongings.
• Coordinate Indigenous-directed consultation and relationship-building with Indigenous Nations via UTM OII.
• Support development of Indigenous-directed standard operating procedures.
• Liaise with Indigenous communities, Anthropology dept., government partners, and other institutions.
• Coordinate repatriation, rematriation, and collaborative stewardship processes.
• Plan long-term stewardship for existing and future collections.
• Manage logistics of stewardship and repatriation including packaging and shipping.
• Occasional travel within Canada to support consultation and repatriation/rematriation.
