The Coos Bay School District is accepting applications for experienced Independent Skills Center Assistants for the 2025-2026 School Year.

Job Title: Independent Skills Center Assistant(s) (ISC)

10-month employee group - 35.00 hours per week (.875 FTE)

Job Description: The Independent Skills Center Assistant provides support to the Independent Skills Teacher in a specialized learning environment, helping students develop academic and functional skills. The Assistant helps reinforce academic concepts and implement intervention strategies to support students’ individual learning needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Instruction:
  • Assist the Independent Skills Teacher in providing individualized academic instruction, behavioral interventions, and adaptive learning support.
  • Support students in one-on-one and small group settings to teach interventions or reinforce lessons.
  • Implement accommodations and modifications based on students' IEPs.
  • Assist students with personal care tasks, including hygiene, toileting, nursing services, and feeding, as needed to support their independence and well-being.
  • Monitor Student Progress:
  • Monitor and track student progress, providing feedback to the teacher and coordinator.
  • Professional Development and Collaboration:
  • Participate in professional development sessions as required.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure students receive appropriate services and supports.
  • Create a positive, supportive learning environment.
  • Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Prepare instructional materials, resources, and classroom displays.
  • Assist students during lunch, recess, drop off, and pick up, ensuring safety and well-being.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Assist with additional tasks as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least two years of relevant college education or an AA degree, or passing the Paraprofessional Exam.
  • Willingness to complete specialized training or certification programs.
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs.
  • Familiarity with Special Education laws preferred.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work with elementary students in various activities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong decision-making skills and adaptability.
  • Ability to assist students with personal and physical care as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands include talking, hearing, walking, sitting, standing, fine manipulation, reaching, keyboard use, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, and peripheral vision.

The work environment is a standard classroom setting with typical equipment. Noise levels vary, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and dysregulated students is possible.
