HR Consultant – Independent Contractor (Project-Based)

GTA-based | Remote-first with occasional in-person meetings and client work

We’re looking for an experienced HR Consultant to join us as an independent contractor on a project basis. This isn’t a full-time or internal HR role. It’s a dynamic opportunity to apply your expertise across multiple organizations, backed by a collaborative team that values flexibility, autonomy and impact.

What You'll Do

You’ll act as a trusted HR partner to our clients, delivering project-based work such as:

  • Developing and reviewing HR policies to ensure compliance and alignment with best practices
  • Supporting compensation reviews, salary structures and job evaluations
  • Providing benefits consulting and working knowledge of benefit provider options
  • Creating performance management frameworks and supporting implementation
  • Designing or improving HR processes that make day-to-day operations more effective
  • Supporting job analysis, role development and talent planning
  • Advising on organizational design, succession planning and leadership development
  • Coaching clients on people practices and workplace challenges
  • Maintaining client relationships and identifying opportunities to provide continued support (note: this is not a sales role, but we do value relationship growth)
  • Supporting other HR initiatives and projects as needed, based on client priorities and emerging needs

This role also includes monthly in-person meetings with the Orion HR team, and occasional on-site client work, such as training sessions or key stakeholder meetings.

What We’re Looking For

We're seeking someone who enjoys variety, can confidently manage client-facing work and is looking for the flexibility of contract consulting.

Requirements:

  • Based in the Greater Toronto Area
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience across multiple functional areas
  • HR-related education (post graduate certificate or degree). CHRP designation is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with policy development, compensation, performance management and organizational design
  • Strong knowledge of federal and provincial employment legislation and compliance standards
  • Familiarity with benefits plans and providers
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Suite and experienced with a range of HRIS, ATS and other digital tools commonly used in the HR industry
  • Able to work independently, manage deadlines and collaborate with both clients and the Orion HR team
  • Access to reliable transportation to various client/meeting locations within the GTA

Nice to have:

  • Experience in leadership coaching or training delivery

Compensation

As this is an independent contractor position, this role will be paid hourly, with rates based on your experience and the scope of the work. Hours will vary depending on client needs and project timelines.
