Job summary

Black & Veatch has an exciting opportunity for a Mid-Level Instrumentation and Control Engineer in Toronto (Markham), Canada. The role supports I&C design for water and wastewater projects, SCADA/PLC/HMI programming, and data-driven solutions across North America.

You will collaborate with regional teams, prepare fee estimates, and participate in client meetings to guide planning, design and construction while growing technical expertise and adapting to local standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized program.
  • Minimum 5 years related work experience.
  • Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record requirements.
  • Pre-employment onboarding requirements may include background check, drug screen, and MVR search.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or support I&C design for water/wastewater projects.
  • Represent I&C topics in client meetings for planning, design, and construction.
  • Prepare I&C fee estimates based on client requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineering and technician staff.
  • Develop P&IDs, specifications, instrument schedules, I/O lists, panels, and installation details.
  • Coordinate with regional and global design teams.
  • Pursue continuous learning and development of technical expertise.
  • Develop familiarity with local utility design standards for appropriate design.
  • Perform site inspections and participate in construction progress meetings.

The Opportunity

Black & Veatch has an exciting opportunity for a Mid-Level Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Engineer within our Engineering and Design Services – Water and Water Solution Engineering Team in Toronto (Markam), Canada.

Our Engineer and Design Services team provides electrical, instrumentation & control, and process mechanical solutions to all of Black & Veatch’s water/wastewater projects throughout North America. Black & Veatch is currently growing our I&C team to support the growing need for I&C, SCADA, automation and data driven solutions for our clients in the Ontario region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support and/or Lead I&C design for water/wastewater projects
  • Participate in client meetings to represent I&C topics for planning, design, and construction
  • Prepare I&C fee estimates for project pursuits based on knowledge of client requirements
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to engineering and technician staff
  • Develop a variety of complex engineering deliverables including P&IDs, technical specifications, instrument schedules, I/O lists, panel layouts, and instrument installation details.
  • Coordinate with regional and global design teams
  • Continuous learning and development of technical expertise/specialty area
  • Develop familiarity with local utility design and construction standards for application to design
  • Perform site inspections and participate in construction progress meetings

Additional Project Opportunities:

  • Automation and control system master plans, studies and technical reports
  • Control system replacement and upgrade projects
  • HMI and PLC application programming
  • Data analytics, network architecture, and cybersecurity
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years’ experience in I&C, SCADA and automation systems design, planning and construction
  • Consulting and Water/Wastewater experience mandatory
  • SCADA, PLC and HMI application programming experience a plus
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing or equivalent experience in Engineering work
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
  • Holds an active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries, and supports where necessary.
