Job summary

John Hancock Technology Office in Toronto seeks a senior software engineer-turned Solution Architect to shape scalable, secure technology solutions across cloud, AI, and modern architectures. You will partner with engineering, product, and business stakeholders, and stay hands-on while guiding architecture decisions.

The role emphasizes leadership, design of ADRs, governance, and delivery of enterprise-grade systems.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline or equivalent experience.
5+ years in software engineering, systems development, or application development.
Experience delivering enterprise-scale applications and technology solutions.
Senior developer/technical lead/engineering lead or similar leadership role.
Hands-on experience with Java, C#, .NET, Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
Experience designing web, mobile, API, integration, or distributed systems.
Knowledge of cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure, and AWS or GCP.
Understanding CI/CD, DevOps, test automation, and Agile delivery.
Experience with cloud-native, microservices, event-driven, API-first architectures.
Familiarity with IaC and deployment automation.
Experience with containerized and serverless technologies.
Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to collaborate with technical and business stakeholders.
Understanding of security, privacy, compliance, and secure design.

Responsibilities

Partner with engineering, product, and business teams to design and deliver scalable technology solutions.
Develop architecture artifacts, technical designs, and recommendations aligned with standards and long-term strategy.
Guide teams through the project lifecycle from concept to delivery.
Design secure, maintainable, resilient, and scalable solutions.
Lead proofs-of-concept and evaluations for emerging technologies.
Contribute to architectures, engineering standards, and best practices.
Communicate options, risks, and trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Define non-functional requirements and implementation approaches with teams.
Review designs, estimates, and code for alignment with objectives.
Evaluate vendor and third-party solutions for integration, security, and operations.
Support architecture governance and technical decision-making.
Document architecture decisions with ADRs.
Identify risks and mitigation strategies.
Contribute to modernization, cloud adoption, AI, automation initiatives.
