Job Profile

The HVAC Technician will be responsible for performing and coordinating scheduled inspections, repairs and modifications to all heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment in the Transit department facilities.

As The HVAC Technicianyou Will

  • Perform regular scheduled preventative maintenance inspections, troubleshoots and repairs on HVAC equipment and controls including make-up air units, exhaust fans, boilers, chillers, air conditioning units, etc., in accordance with established schedules and procedures.
  • Perform layout, assembly installations and modifications to HVAC equipment in accordance with all codes and regulations.
  • Assist with: developing preventative maintenance schedules and procedures related to HVAC equipment, maintaining an inventory of necessary spare HVAC components, determining the necessary tools and equipment required for HVAC equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare necessary information and applications to obtain permits for installation and maintenance of gas equipment.
  • Maintain and update blueprints and drawings to document modifications and component changes to HVAC equipment.
  • Monitor HVAC equipment and controls performance using the Johnson Controls METASYS PC-based direct digital control system software.
  • Coordinate scheduled maintenance and repairs to HVAC equipment and systems with outside contractors and with other Winnipeg Transit areas when required.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be a Certified Journeyman Commercial and Industrial Gas Fitter with an “A” Licence and a limited electrical licence.
  • Must possess a Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association (MOPIA) Licence.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience installing, troubleshooting and repairing HVAC equipment including direct and indirect fired makeup air units exceeding 400,000 Btu in capacity, exhaust fans exceeding 700 cfm, boilers, chillers, air conditioning systems, air handlers and all related controls, field devices and components.
  • Experience operating and maintaining natural gas fired equipment required.
  • Experience monitoring and controlling HVAC equipment operations using Johnson Controls METASYS system is required.
  • Must be able to read and interpret wiring, schematic and control drawings for PLC and hard-wired control circuits and to use test equipment to diagnose equipment faults on HVAC equipment.
  • Requires demonstrated organizational skills to complete several concurrent projects in an environment of rapidly changing priorities.
  • Must be able to communicate and express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to effectively lead a small group of workers and work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Requires ability to adhere to the requirement of Respectful Workplace Standard.

Conditions Of Employment

  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is his/her responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid .
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence in good standing.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the routine manual labour components of the position, which may include but are not limited to: heavy lifting (up to 100lbs), maneuvering within or around large equipment, exposure to dust, noise, extreme weather conditions, diesel exhaust fumes and chemical agents used in the mechanical field.
  • Successful candidate(s) must have a complete set of hand tools specific to the trade on the first day of employment.
