Job description

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving the education needs of approximately 17,950 students in 42 schools. EIPS is recruiting a full-time HVAC Technician with our Facility Services department.

Facility Services is located at the EIPS Central Administration building in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the division, Central administration is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students, and Information Technologies.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Foreman, the HVAC Technician is responsible for the daily execution of duties as assigned, by organizing, scheduling, carrying out, and monitoring the completion of work in his/her area of responsibility. The HVAC Technician is responsible for all aspects of the HVAC trade.

  • Carry out all routine, emergency, and preventive maintenance, and special projects as assigned by the foreman.
  • Perform all aspects of the HVAC trade in accordance with standard trade practices, applicable standards and codes; organize the selection, drawing and delivery of materials and special equipment to the work site; prioritize, coordinate and schedule assigned work with building occupants and other trades and/or contractors for optimum efficiency and minimum disruption in the schools.
  • Organize and achieve professional results in the installation, modification, repair and/or calibration of all types of electric, electronic, or pneumatic control devices, panels, sensors, switches and components on heating, ventilation and air conditioning units, refrigeration units, coolers, boilers, and building automation/energy management systems.
  • Work as a team player with other Facility Services personnel, specialized trades and contractors in the design and implementation of specialized maintenance work and projects.
  • Carry out assigned inspections and investigate problems, provide solutions, prepare reports, sketches, and detailed estimates; during normal daily routine identify problems and report them to the Foreman.
  • Prepare and/or complete administrative documentation associated with timekeeping, work order system, material, and special equipment requests.
  • Carry out the duties of standby and after hours call out tradesman and act as foreman when required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Minimum grade 12 education.
  • Possess a current valid Alberta Journeyman trade certificate in a related area/field
  • Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Certificate Preferred.
  • Alternate certification may be considered
  • Certification as a 4th class Power Engineer by Alberta Boiler Safety Association
  • Journeyman Instrumentation Technician
  • Building Operator Class “A” Certificate.
  • Additional courses and/or certification in controls and/or instrumentation.
  • Minimum three years of experience after completion of certification, preferably in an institutional or commercial setting.
  • Previous experience in preventive maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Trained in WHMIS procedures.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the Elk Island Public Schools Vehicle and Equipment Operating Manual.

Demonstrated Skills And Competencies

  • Ability to work with little or no supervision.
  • Working knowledge of all building and fire codes.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety codes and Workers’ Compensation regulations
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and schedule multiple work tasks.
  • Ability to supervise contractors and other staff.
  • Detailed knowledge of building operations and maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Experience in monitoring and programming building automation and energy management systems
  • Ability to liaise with school administrative staff.
  • Ability to respond to and correct emergency situations.
  • Ability to track and record work and prepare reports.
  • Ability to identify hazardous material, i.e. Asbestos.
