Human Resources Generalist

About Canucks Autism Network

Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing programs for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families while promoting acceptance and inclusion through community engagement and training initiatives across BC. Our vision is for every individual on the autism spectrum to be understood accepted and supported in all community spaces.

We engage a workforce of over 200 volunteers and 400 frontline staff to deliver programs for children youth and adults on the spectrum in communities across British Columbia. Since its inception in 2008 CAN has directly impacted over 8000 members on the autism spectrum.

The Opportunity

CAN is looking for an experienced Human Resources (HR) Generalist to join our team and help meet our growing recruitment and HR needs. Reporting to the Senior Manager HR and Staffing and working closely with a number of cross-departmental teams, the HR Generalist is primarily focused on recruitment of front-line program and event staff as well as supporting the recruitment of full-time office roles. In addition to recruitment, the HR Generalist assists with other HR-related areas such as onboarding, policies and procedures, employee relations & performance management, and health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding (70%)

  • Coordinating with hiring managers to assess their talent requirements, create and update job descriptions, and advise on the best hiring strategies
  • Planning and performing quarterly recruitment activities for front-line program staff and coordinating all teams that assist in the recruitment process
  • Managing job postings, reviewing and screening incoming job applications, preparing interview materials, coordinating and conducting interviews using various methods (i.e. skills assessments and structured interviews)
  • Responding to general employment inquiries from prospective candidates
  • Sourcing candidates via databases, social networks & specialist platforms, building a network of partnerships and presenting both virtually and in-person to external groups on employment opportunities at CAN
  • Administering reference checks, criminal record checks and creating employment offer letters for successful applicants
  • Managing the onboarding process and following up with successful applicants to ensure the timely collection of employee information and payroll forms
  • Assisting and advising regional teams on recruitment-related activities
  • Training recruiting practices and procedures to other hiring managers

HR Support (30%)

  • Overseeing the employee concern process for program and event staff, providing support and guidance to Program and Event Coordinators and escalating complex cases to the Senior Manager of HR and Staffing when necessary
  • Administering performance management processes for CAN staff
  • Responding to reference letter and employment file requests for existing and former CAN staff
  • Assisting with staff and volunteer annual engagement surveys, including developing survey questions, compiling and analyzing results, and making recommendations
  • Developing new and maintaining existing HR-related policies and procedures to ensure they are updated and compliant with relevant employment and occupational health and safety legislation
  • Managing workplace injuries and incidents with WorksafeBC
  • Participating as a member and HR representative of the joint occupational health and safety committee
  • Providing mentorship and coaching and acting as backup to HR Coordinators
  • Assisting with leave management processes by informing staff of processes, administering necessary paperwork and acting as point of contact for benefit providers
  • Supporting larger HR strategic initiatives to further CAN's current strategic priorities

Job Requirements & Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field
  • 3 - 4 years of generalist HR experience in employee relations, occupational health and safety, policy development and interpretation, performance management and leave management
  • 1-2 years of full cycle, high-volume recruitment experience
  • Prior experience working in the community services sector and/or non-profit sector considered an asset

  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, Applicant Tracking Systems, Smartsheet and Formstack
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport quickly with colleagues and prospective applicants
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment juggling multiple deadlines
  • Enjoys working both independently and as part of a team
