The role – what you’ll do
Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada Limited (Barr Ltd.) is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to join our Calgary, Alberta, team. In this hybrid position, your primary role will be to work with the Assessment and Remediation (AR) Business Unit and the Corporate Human Resources team of Barr Engineering Co. on HR-related activities in support of AR-aligned staff throughout the organization. In addition, you will work on corporate HR functions in support of Barr Ltd.

Your impact – key responsibilities
Staffing and recruiting – Partnering with business unit leadership to identify staffing needs and facilitating the recruiting and hiring process, either independently or in partnership with corporate recruiters
Talent management – Assisting with the development of integration plans and workload management
Local HR support – Serving as the local point of contact for Canadian human resources functions, including benefits administration, HR compliance and policy development, employee relations aligned with Canadian workplace standards, and regional recruitment support.
HR projects – Participating in or leading HR projects at the business unit or company level in areas such as employee engagement, evaluating business unit data and metrics, learning and development, diversity and inclusion, benchmarking and analyzing industry and competitive practices, or other efforts
Compensation – Supporting processes associated with compensation and bonus setting
Employee relations – Managing and resolving complex employee relations issues
Staff development – Coordinating coaching and staff development efforts
About the opportunity
Hybrid: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr Ltd. office and a home office. This position is based in our Calgary, Alberta, office
Travel expectation: Ability to occasionally travel to the U.S. or other offices in Canada is preferred.
Work environment: Work will be completed primarily in an office environment.

About you – required core competencies
Education: Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related area
Experience: Eight years of related experience
Knowledge of provincial employment laws for locales where we have staff (currently Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario)
Familiarity with laws and rules around immigration between Canada and the U.S. for work-related purposes
Experience using HRIS and applicant tracking systems
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a team and build and maintain relationships at multiple levels and across geographic office locations
Consultative approach to problem solving
Strong interest and aptitude for gathering, analyzing, reporting, and portraying data in a concise format
Software: Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite programs
Driver’s license: Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future
Helpful additional experience (not required)
Certification: CPHR or equivalent
Experience: 10 years of related experience
Knowledge of U.S. employment law
Work experience with a company that has a U.S. presence or base
Experience with engineering, professional service, or consulting firms
