Job description

Who are we?

The Ballad team is comprised of business professionals, strengthening the communities in which we live and work. Our diverse team brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and creativity to each project we undertake. We provide services related to training, business planning, government relations, Indigenous engagement, and community development. Ballad ensures that the work we undertake has meaningful impact, ALWAYS.

Today, Ballad employs more than 90 team members across 13 offices throughout Alberta. We operate innovative simulated worksites that include construction, hospitality, warehouse, retail, and industrial training environments, helping thousands of Albertans develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the workforce.

The Opportunity

Ballad is looking for a Human Resources Coordinator to join our HR team and help support the people, programs, and systems that make Ballad a great place to work. This is an in-person role which will take place at our downtown Calgary office.

This is a hands-on HR role for someone who likes variety. One day you may be supporting recruitment for a new position, the next you could be helping coordinate professional development, answering an employee question, updating a policy, pulling together HR data, or helping us improve an internal process.

You’ll work across the employee experience, with a particular focus on:

  • Recruitment and onboarding
  • Employee engagement and retention
  • Performance management
  • Compensation and benefits
  • HR policies, systems, and administration

A big part of this role is helping make HR clear, fair, practical, and useful for the people relying on it. We are looking for someone who is organized and thoughtful, but who is also comfortable working with people, asking questions, using good judgment, and taking ownership of their work.

What You’ll Do

  • Support recruitment from start to finish, including job postings, candidate screening, interviews, reference checks, offers, and onboarding.
  • Help develop, update, and improve HR policies, tools, templates, and processes as Ballad continues to grow.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and help us understand what is working, where employees need more support, and where we can improve.
  • Maintain accurate employee records, HR documentation, systems, and reporting.
  • Help coordinate employee onboarding and ensure new team members have a welcoming, organized, and well-supported start at Ballad.
  • Support Ballad’s performance management processes, including goal setting, performance reviews, development planning, and related documentation.
  • Coordinate professional development, internal learning opportunities, mentorship, and other initiatives that help employees grow within the organization.
  • Assist with compensation and benefits administration, including research, benchmarking, employee questions, and maintaining accurate information.
  • Provide employees and leaders with practical HR support while knowing when an issue needs to be escalated.
  • Support sensitive employee matters including accommodations, performance concerns, workplace investigations, disciplinary processes, and terminations.
  • Track and interpret basic HR data and trends to help inform decisions related to recruitment, retention, engagement, compensation, and workforce planning.
  • Stay current on Alberta employment legislation, HR best practices, and emerging trends that may impact our people or workplace.
  • Work closely with leaders to understand current and future staffing needs and help identify the skills and experience required for new roles.
  • Jump into other HR projects and priorities as needed. We are a growing organization, and there is rarely only one thing happening at a time.

This role will report to the Manager of Human Resources.

Experience and Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business, Arts, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Two or more years of relevant HR or people-related experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build relationships across different roles and teams.
  • Confidence navigating difficult or sensitive conversations with professionalism and discretion.
  • Strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • An understanding of basic HR analytics and comfort working with data and reporting.
  • Working knowledge of employment standards and HR best practices.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly when working with employee information, documentation, and HR processes.
  • Comfortable working independently while also being highly collaborative.
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions, and take ownership of your work.
