Human Resources Business Partner

Overview

Trisura is a fast-growing North American specialty insurance firm with an entrepreneurial culture and a high bar for talent. Based out of our Toronto office, we are seeking a Human Resources Business Partner to support our specialty businesses and claims organization.

Reporting to the VP, Human Resources, the HRBP is the go-to HR contact for managers across our business and functional teams, supporting them on talent, performance, and culture priorities. The HRBP will partner closely with our Benefits & Payroll, Talent Acquisition, and Learning & Development Centers of Excellence to deliver integrated people solutions to the business. This role is highly hands-on — you'll help managers lead more effectively, speed up quality hiring, and support a healthy, engaged team culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with business and functional leaders on day-to-day people priorities, workforce planning, and critical-role hiring needs aligned to underwriting, claims, surety, and structured solutions priorities.
  • Performance & Leadership: Support goal setting and performance cycles and assist with talent calibration and succession planning discussions; coach managers on feedback, accountability, and decision-making.
  • Employee Relations: Support managers with performance discussions and day-to-day performance management, including straightforward disciplinary actions and terminations; elevate complex ER matters and investigations to the Director or VP, Human Resources; ensure consistent, fair, and legally compliant outcomes.
  • HR Programs & Lifecycle: Support employee onboarding and offboarding (voluntary and involuntary), including documentation and risk mitigation; assist with the rollout of company-wide HR programs and support manager and employee training on policies, performance, and compliance.
  • Talent Acquisition: Partner with TA to prioritize critical roles; improve time-to-fill, quality-of-hire, and ensure tracking of replacements, and new budgeted hires.
  • Total Rewards: Partner with talent acquisition, the business and finance on market-aligned offers and promotions, pay equity, and pay-for-performance cycles.
  • Change & Integration: Support change management for business transformation and organizational change initiatives, as well as HR programs & policies and system/process rollouts, with clear communications and adoption plans.
  • People Analytics: Monitor HR data (attrition, engagement, mobility, gender diversity, open roles) and help translate trends into practical actions for the business.
  • Risk & Compliance: Support adherence to applicable federal and provincial employment laws and insurance/surety regulatory requirements

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or college diploma required, with a concentration in Business, or Human Resources. CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) or CHRL (Certified Human Resources Leader) designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in a client-facing HRBP or senior generalist role.
  • Insurance industry experience strongly preferred — including exposure to surety, underwriting, claims, or MGA/program administration; broader financial services experience also considered.
  • Solid command of Canadian federal and provincial employment legislation (e.g., Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, AODA), with the ability to apply it to day-to-day business decisions.
  • Understanding of Canadian group retirement plans (e.g., RRSP) and group benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, disability, life, leave administration); able to partner effectively with NA Payroll & Benefits team and external brokers/carriers.
  • Experience supporting employee relations, workforce planning, and change management initiatives.
  • Experience with HCM and people analytics tools; Dayforce experience preferred, but experience with another HCM software is welcome.
  • Strong sense of urgency and prioritization skills, with excellent collaboration abilities across teams.
  • Excellent judgment, confidentiality, and professionalism; strong written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to the other Trisura offices ~10%; must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

If you are looking for a career in an exciting and rewarding company, are driven to excel, thrive in a team environment and want to contribute to the success of an organization that values your contribution, we would like to hear from you!
