Job summary

Summary

We are seeking candidates with a strong understanding of conducting Human Factors Engineering (HFE) work in the nuclear power industry as per NUREG-0700.

This includes:

  • Knowledge of developing HFE Program Plans (HFEPPs).
  • Familiarity with the methodologies for each HFE program element identified in NUREG-0700.
  • Ability to apply these methodologies effectively in engineering modifications.
Job Overview

The work involves execution and monitoring of the Pickering Nuclear Refurbishment (PNR) Integrated HFEPP. Responsibilities include:

  • Active management of EPC vendors regarding their HFE scope through all phases of engineering change: scoping, design, installation and commissioning planning, installation, commissioning, Available for Service (AFS), and close-out.
  • Oversight across more than 120 projects, including major bundles such as:
  • Retube & Feeder Replacement
  • Boiler Replacement
  • Turbine Generator
  • Deep Water Intake
  • Balance of PlantFacilities and Infrastructure
Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with vendors to manage HFE deliverables and ensure compliance with OPG and industry standards.
  • Review and accept vendor documentation under ECC governance, including:
    • HFEPPs, Interim HFE Reports, HFESRs
    • HFE Verification & Validation Plans and Reports
    • N‑FORM‑10221 Parts A–D
    • Conceptual design reports, design plans, HMI drawings/change papers, commissioning specs
  • Conduct and review HFE analyses:
    • Operational Experience Reviews (OER)
    • Task Analysis, Function Allocation, Link & Communication Analysis
    • Workload Analysis, Workspace Layout Assessment
    • HMI Design Review, Usability Testing, Integrated HMI V&V
  • Provide SME recommendations for modification‑specific documentation (design requirements, technical specs, HMI change papers, system design manuals, software requirements).
  • Support installation and commissioning, including review of construction completion declarations and commissioning reports.
  • Participate in walkdowns, AFS, SAFS, RTS, and Refurbishment Restart Control Hold Points (RCHP).
  • Identify and resolve significant refurbishment HFE issues.
  • Confirm HFE documents relevant for training and procedures are included in MEC reference document list.
  • Support regulatory interface: status updates, input to correspondence, and inspection interviews.
  • Perform aggregate HFE analysis to assess impacts on minimum staff complement for PRP modifications, supporting RCHP prerequisites.
Qualifications
  • Must meet OPG’s Nuclear Design Engineering Qualification Program:
    • Design Engineer of Human‑Machine Interfaces (QID 33685 or 45233)
    • Duty area qualification (QID 7768)
  • Demonstrated competency in CANDU-specific HFE design experience.
  • Knowledge of NUREG‑0700, NUREG‑0711, and OPG standards.
  • Familiarity with ECC governance and engineering change processes.
