Overview

The HR Generalist plays a critical role in delivering comprehensive human resources services and support to employees and leaders across our fast-paced transportation and logistics organization. This position is responsible for Western Canada. This includes offices in Sherwood Park, Calgary, Regina, mechanic shops in Edmonton and Calgary and Bulk Terminal sites in Grande Prairie and Carseland. Drivers are located across BC, AB and SK.

This position is responsible for managing a wide range of HR functions including employee relations, performance management, benefits administration, workers’ compensation, policy interpretation, and compliance with federal and provincial employment legislation.

Working closely with operations and corporate teams, the HR Generalist serves as a trusted advisor and resource to managers and employees, ensuring HR best practices are consistently applied to foster a positive, fair, and compliant workplace culture. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and a hands-on approach to resolving HR matters in a dynamic, multi-location environment.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations & Policy Compliance

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee inquiries and concerns, resolving issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide guidance to supervisors and managers on employee relations matters, disciplinary actions, and performance improvement plans.
  • Conduct internal investigations into employee complaints, policy violations, and workplace conflicts; recommend and document appropriate outcomes and actions.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, the Canada Labour Code, and applicable provincial legislation.
  • Support the development, implementation, and communication of HR policies and procedures across the organization.

Performance Management & Organizational Support

  • Partner with managers to implement performance review processes and assist with employee development plans.
  • Coach managers on effective feedback techniques and progressive discipline strategies.
  • Identify and help resolve organizational issues that affect employee engagement, retention, and productivity.

Benefits Administration

  • Oversee employee benefits programs including health, dental, life insurance, and RRSPs.
  • Act as liaison between employees and benefit providers to resolve issues or answer questions.
  • Complete all manual benefits enrollments, status changes, and annual open enrollment processes.
  • Educate employees on benefit offerings and promote wellness initiatives.

Workers’ Compensation & Leave Management

  • Manage all aspects of workers’ compensation cases: intake, reporting, modified work coordination, follow-ups, and return-to-work plans.
  • Prepare documentation and liaise with WCB and other regulatory bodies to ensure timely and compliant case resolution.
  • Track and manage employee leaves of absence (e.g., medical, maternity, parental, and personal leaves), ensuring alignment with legislation and company policy.

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Support the Recruitment Team in the candidate screening, selection, and offer process for both union and non-union roles.
  • Facilitate onboarding processes and orientations to ensure smooth integration of new hires.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of recruitment and retention strategies.

HR Data Management & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee files and HRIS records.
  • Generate HR reports related to turnover, absenteeism, compliance, and workforce analytics.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with internal audit requirements.

Other Duties

  • Assist with planning and supporting company events, employee engagement initiatives, and recognition programs.
  • Provide support during organizational changes or restructuring
  • Perform additional HR-related duties and special projects as required.
  • Occasional travel to field locations or terminals may be required.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Diploma or Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive HR Generalist experience, ideally in transportation, logistics, manufacturing, or a similarly fast-paced, operational environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of employment legislation, including the Canada Labour Code and relevant provincial laws for Alberta
  • Strong experience managing workers’ compensation claims and modified work programs.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations and handling complex employee relations issues.
  • Experience administering group benefits and retirement programs (e.g., RRSP, pension).
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to adapt messaging to various audiences, from frontline employees to senior leadership.
  • High level of discretion and integrity when handling confidential information.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel – including VLOOKUPs and Pivot Tables, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint).
  • Experience working with HRIS platforms (e.g., Dayforce, ADP, BambooHR) is an asset.
  • CHRP or CHRL designation (or in progress) is preferred.
Work Environment & Travel
  • This role may require occasional travel to terminal locations or field offices.
  • Hybrid or on-site work schedule based on operational needs.
