POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the assigned supervisor, the Housing & Health Nurse (HHN) is responsible for providing assessment and consultative services for applicants and tenants with complex social and healthcare needs and/or behavioral problems. The HHN provides training programs and critical event stress management defusing services, and liaises with regional and community health authorities, non-profit housing societies, and co-operative housing groups. This position, registered as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), may provide direct service delivery to clients in BC Housing Programs and offer clinical oversight to other Housing and Health Services staff.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :
- Degree from a recognized program for Registered Nurses or Registered Psychiatric Nurses.
- Eligibility to practice nursing in British Columbia as an RN or RPN.
- Extensive experience working with individuals with psychiatric disorders and complex social/healthcare needs or behavioral issues in a community setting.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to the employer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
- Knowledge of signs and symptoms of common medical conditions.
- Knowledge of medications prescribed for common medical conditions.
- Knowledge of signs and symptoms of common psychiatric disorders.
- Understanding of psychotropic medications, including contraindications, precautions, adverse effects, dosage, and administration routes.
- Knowledge of non-pharmaceutical treatments for psychiatric disorders.
- Skills in psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
- Understanding of various mental health and addiction housing models.
- Knowledge of substance abuse and treatment programs.
- Familiarity with community health resources and social services.
- Ability to provide consultation, crisis intervention, and coordinate referrals.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prepare assessment and consultation reports within deadlines.
- Capability to plan, organize, and adapt to changing workloads independently.
- Skill in establishing workload priorities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Competence in working with diverse populations from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to deliver training programs.
- Ability to provide critical event stress management services following traumatic events.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop positive relationships with agencies and service providers.
- Strong assessment and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Willingness to travel and work periodic evenings; extensive travel outside the Lower Mainland may be required.
- Valid BC Driver’s License and reliable vehicle for emergency response.
- Current registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
- Criminal Record Check clearance.
