Job summary

West Coast Seniors Housing Management is seeking a Lead Hand to oversee cleaning and laundry duties in our community, ensuring sanitation standards and a safe environment for residents and staff.

The role reports to the Support Services Manager and includes supervising housekeeping staff, training, inventory control, and collaboration to maintain high-quality service. Applicants should have Grade 12, WHMIS, First Aid, and housekeeping leadership experience.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education and experience in housekeeping leadership.
  • 1–2 years’ housekeeping experience, leadership preferred.
  • WHMIS certificate required.
  • First Aid certificate as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
  • Participates in the orientation of staff by educating on the cleaning duties with appropriate training and demonstration of products, ensuring employees understand use and application of cleaning chemicals
  • Maintains inventory control including individual carts while ensuring all cleaning areas have appropriate cleaning products for use.
  • Notify designate manager when replenishment of products is needed.
  • Carries out and supervises all aspects of routine and rotation cleaning throughout the building and suites
  • Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through:
  • knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations,
  • the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary
  • keeps work area in an orderly, safe and clean condition
  • keeps inventory in order on individual carts; replenishes supplies throughout the building, and
  • Performs routine and as needed audits, assists to establish actions to address deficiencies.
  • Ensures housekeeping and laundry staff are following the recommended and appropriate Infection Control practices, WHMIS guidelines and that Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are kept current and available to staff.
  • Coaches and mentors support staff and notifies supervisor of any staff issues.
  • Promotes and maintains positive communication and relationships among staff, residents, tenants, and the public.
  • Carries out and supervises routine and special duties involved in providing laundry services to the residents and tenants of the community.
  • Reports significant changes or uncommon resident behaviour or concerns to nursing staff as required.
  • Attends and participates in community and education programs.
  • Participates in community committees and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

About the Role

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in housekeeping, preferable in a leadership role.
  • WHMIS Certificate.
  • Knowledge of floor care procedures and experience operating floor care equipment preferred.
  • Building Service Worker Certificate or equivalent training preferred
  • First Aid Certificate as applicable.
  • Free from communicable diseases and allergies or conditions which may be aggravated by working with cleaners, detergents, and equipment.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
  • All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 30 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment.
