Job Description

Service Delivery

  • Clean offices, multi-purpose rooms, chapel, staff and resident lounges, bedrooms, hallways, lobbies, washrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, lockers, and other work areas to meet health standards. Keep all areas around the building clean and tidy.
  • Empty garbage bins, ashtrays, and transport waste to disposal areas.
  • Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors using appropriate equipment.
  • Wash windows, walls, ceilings, and other surfaces as necessary.
  • Dust and polish furniture and equipment, ensuring regular cleaning and disinfection.
  • Maintain storage areas and carts, keeping them well-stocked and tidy.
  • Polish silver accessories and metal fixtures.
  • Remove debris from parking lots, storage rooms, kitchen, and dining areas.
  • Clean rugs and carpets, using vacuum cleaners or water wash in warm weather.
  • Replenish housekeeping supplies and record inventory.
  • Assist with preparing hostel floors for pest control treatments, monitoring the process with pest control technicians.
  • Sort linens, operate washing machines, fold, and store items accordingly.
  • Assign and monitor duties with volunteers and probation volunteers, providing instructions as needed.
  • Deliver beds, mattresses, and linens to client rooms.
  • Dust window curtains and blinds.
  • Handle client belongings, including bagging, labeling, recording, storing, and discarding.
  • Prepare meeting rooms and chapel for events.
  • Clean and disinfect water fountains in the building.

Administrative

  • Report property or equipment damage promptly.
  • Follow safety rules and operate equipment safely.
  • Protect client property, report damage, theft, or lost items.
  • Keep the supervisor informed of issues or concerns.

Critical Relationship Management

Internal

  • Coordinate with supervisors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Participate in staff meetings to review operations.

External

  • Engage with clients.

Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility

  • Report directly to the Business Director or designate.

Financial and Materials Management

  • Store cleaning supplies properly, complying with health and safety regulations.

Working Conditions

  • This is a casual, unionized, on-call position with no guaranteed hours.
  • Work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Requires physical ability to lift/move 30 lbs., reach, bend, twist, mop, sweep, and perform other physical tasks.

Education, Qualifications, and Certifications

  • Grade 12 OSSD or equivalent.
  • Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC) including Vulnerable Population check.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training.
  • WHMIS certification.
  • Onsite e-Training completion.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and tools, with physical fitness for related tasks.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Health and Safety standards.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge

  • Between three months and one year of related experience, with familiarity in cleaning and maintenance procedures.
  • Understanding and support of The Salvation Army’s mission in Canada.

Compensation

The target salary is $17.55 per hour. Salary placement depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
