Job summary

The Salvation Army Kate Booth House is seeking a part-time housekeeper for an overnight maternity leave cover. You will perform janitorial duties to keep the women’s shelter clean, safe, and welcoming for residents.

This role runs Sunday to Thursday, 11:30pm–8am, and is restricted to female applicants due to client privacy and safety requirements. Responsibilities include cleaning multiple areas, maintaining laundry and supplies, and reporting repairs while supporting overall health and safety

Qualifications

  • Experience in janitorial or housekeeping roles preferred.
  • Ability to perform light repairs and operate basic cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards in a shelter environment.

Responsibilities

  • Clean floors, windows, surfaces, and washrooms; restock supplies.
  • Identify repairs and report to supervisor; ensure building security.

Job Description

Position Purpose summary: The role is responsible for performing janitorial duties and ensuring The Salvation Army Kate Booth House facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards. The part-time housekeeper is part of our mission to provide a welcoming, caring environment for women and children at risk of violence.

This position is a temporary maternity leave cover. This an overnight role, 11:30pm - 8am, Sunday - Thursday.

This role is restricted to female applicants due to a bona fide occupational requirement related to client privacy, dignity, and safety within a women's shelter environment.

Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas.
  • Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facilities i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied.
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges, etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
  • Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles, checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required.
  • Regular upkeep of laundry (beddings, towels, donations for boutique) Monitor items for issues and ensure replacement of items as needed.
  • Ensure kitchen cleanliness, clean and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required.
  • Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
  • Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), wall patch-painting, light furniture fixing (tighten screws) reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor.
  • Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Maintain parkade cleanliness as needed.
  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping entrances and courtyards clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick-up, dusting/cleaning external doors and entrance areas, and upkeep of storage shed.
Health & Safety
  • Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS-compliant labeling.
  • Keep laundry area clean and safe by adhering to all health and safety standards.
  • Contribute to the overall safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and guests (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the buildings).
  • Use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer.
  • Report any workplace hazards, dangers, safety issues, injuries, or illness' immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Support the overnight Residential Support Worker in an emergency situation.
  • Be aware of the security system.
Working Conditions

Work environment is typically at the facilities in generally agreeable conditions. Some duties (groundskeeping) should be performed outdoors. The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, occasional ladder work, and fine motor skills. Requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment. Ability to lift/move up to 49 pounds.
