This role requires full time on site presence.

CBC Edmonton is looking for a dynamic new host for Edmonton AM, our top-rated morning current affairs radio program.

In this role, you will be the voice that sets the news agenda for listeners across Edmonton and northern Alberta, helping them make sense of their world as they get up each morning.

You will be an insatiably curious storyteller with a passion for drawing information, emotion and stories out of interview subjects. You are an active listener who seeks clarity and understanding, anticipating what the audience needs and wants to know. As such, you are equally comfortable holding a politician accountable as you are chatting with children, and you know when to put people at ease and when to challenge them.

An exceptional journalist and a keen observer, you will be expected to quickly analyze a broad range of issues – from politics to social issues to business, pop culture, science and environment and everything in between. You are comfortable going on the air at any time, reacting to breaking news and changing events, updating and adapting the program as needed.

You understand that audiences want to be both entertained and informed as they start their day, and you realize the importance of making audiences feel welcome and part of a community when listening to Edmonton AM. You know that using a full range of tones, including humour, is key to strong radio current affairs programming.

You have a sense of adventure, an eclectic range of interests and a keen desire to meet new people, explore our city, and learn other perspectives. You are passionate about Edmonton and northern Alberta, and its diversity of people and viewpoints. You have a strong desire to give listeners knowledge, insight and a deeper understanding about their community, and you champion stories from under-represented communities.

You will play a key role in helping us grow audiences, whether that’s meeting listeners where they live through in-person public appearances and remote broadcasts, or contributing to and appearing on CBC programming on digital and visual platforms including podcasts, television and social media.

As a leader on the Edmonton AM team, you will act as a team unifier, mentor and collaborator, consistently offering creative solutions to challenges, and helping other team members reach their highest potential through coaching and thoughtful feedback.

Your Responsibilities

  • Host Edmonton AM live on air weekdays from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., conducting interviews on a wide variety of current events.
  • Pitch and produce original stories that deepen Edmonton AM’s community connections, elevate a range of voices and reflect the day’s top local news.
  • Conduct research and interviews, gather audio, write radio scripts, and package and present content.
  • Interact extemporaneously with program participants such as guests, reporters, experts and members of the audience.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to promote Edmonton AM and CBC, with a focus on growing new audiences and building connections.
  • Host and appear on other programming across platforms as needed.
  • Be more than a voice, be a leader - offer support, feedback and guidance to the team, work together to keep the energy high and the content fresh.

Your Profile

  • An engaging, curious, and spontaneous on-air personality, with a wide range of interests, knowledge and insight, reflecting curiosity in many current affairs topics, and an ability to make them relevant to existing and new audiences.
  • Strong journalistic skills, demonstrated through original story ideas, live interviewing, innovative storytelling, and writing and vetting abilities.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC journalistic standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing circumstances and breaking news; comfortable going off-script when needed.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Edmonton and northern Alberta, and an openness to diverse perspectives and ideas.
  • Familiarity with digital and social storytelling, and a willingness to learn and tackle new tasks across all CBC platforms (TV, radio, digital, social).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and locations.
  • A proven work ethic and a positive team-first attitude.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • A passion for public outreach and an enthusiastic ambassador of public broadcasting and the program.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.
  • University degree or equivalent in a related field, with a minimum of five years of relevant or comparable experience.
