Job Title: Horticulturist

Department: Community Services

Wage: $29.30 - $31.69 (2025)

Reports To: Supervisor, Forestry and Horticulture

Union: CUPE Local 855 Outside

Hours: Up to 9 months, 40 hours/week, with possible evenings and weekends

Location: Travel throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes; work locations may vary

Essential Duties

  • Recommend, design, prepare, and implement horticultural displays
  • Plant, transplant, and propagate plant material based on cultural requirements
  • Inspect woody and herbaceous plants for pests or diseases and report damages
  • Implement Plant Health Care programs as needed
  • Perform landscape construction tasks such as sodding, garden installation, and path repair
  • Maintain parks through litter control and related activities
  • Operate landscape equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers, and tools
  • Respond to public inquiries about horticulture, referring complex matters to the Supervisor
  • Guide and support seasonal employees in gardening and grounds maintenance
  • Maintain records and prepare reports
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Horticulture or related field
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience, preferably municipal
  • Practical gardening experience including bed preparation, planting, and maintenance
  • Valid Ontario Class D driver's license with Z endorsement or willingness to obtain
  • Preferred pesticide license
  • Asset: Certification in Integrated Pest Management or Plant Health Care
  • Knowledge of plant materials, propagation, and seasonal cycles
  • Ability to design and implement garden plans
  • Knowledge of fertilization and watering requirements
  • Ability to identify and treat pests, diseases, and weeds
  • Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
  • WHMIS, First Aid, CPR certifications preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective time management and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Excellent written skills with attention to detail
  • Problem-solving skills related to horticulture
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software
