HOMELESSNESS OUTREACH WORKER :

Salary Range: $64,991.02 - $75,143.40 Annually

Position Summary

Reporting to the Coordinated Access and Assessment Manager, the Homelessness Outreach Worker connects with people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless in community locations. They assist individuals to navigate housing and related support systems.

The incumbent collaborates with shelters, supportive housing providers, and homelessness service agencies to ensure an integrated system of supports and services. As a core member of the multidisciplinary regional homelessness and encampment response team (HEART), the position supports communities to prevent, minimize, and resolve encampments and respond to homelessness through coordination and rapid support for individuals outdoors.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma plus completion of post-secondary courses in social housing, community development, mental health, trauma counselling, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Considerable progressive experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty, especially those with physical, mental, or psychological disabilities, and substance use challenges.
  • Experience liaising with government, private, and community-based housing providers, and working with diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Some experience with crisis management and de-escalation techniques.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to the employer.
  • Tier 4 Criminal Record Check required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of causes of homelessness, mental illness, and addiction.
  • Understanding of the importance of cultural and community connections in supporting individuals to improve well-being and exit homelessness.
  • Lived experience or understanding of impacts of residential schools, trauma, and abuse.
  • Knowledge of housing service providers.
  • De-escalation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Understanding of holistic wellness and healing initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and other software.
  • Empathy, confidentiality, and sensitivity when engaging with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to develop partnerships with community service providers.
  • Willingness to learn about BC Housing programs and services.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with individuals facing homelessness.
  • Ability to travel, work evenings and weekends, with a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Successful applicants must pass a criminal record check and maintain security clearance.
