Duties and Responsibilities
Personal Care and Hygiene Support
- Assist with daily personal hygiene: Helping clients with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and oral care.
- Assist with mobility: Help clients move around the home or community, transfer from bed to chair, or assist with walking if needed.
- Support with incontinence care: Changing incontinence products or assisting with toileting needs.
- Medication reminders: Ensuring the client takes prescribed medications by prompting or assisting.
Household Assistance
- Light housekeeping: Vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, and tidying.
- Meal preparation and planning: Preparing nutritious meals according to the client's dietary needs or preferences.
- Laundry: Washing, folding, and putting away.
- Shopping and errands: Assisting with grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, and running other errands.
Companionship and Social Support
- Companionship: Engaging in conversations, playing games, or participating in hobbies to provide emotional support and prevent loneliness and cognitive decline.
- Accompanying appointments: Providing transportation or companionship to medical, therapy, or social appointments.
- Encouraging and maintaining social connections: Helping clients preserve relationships with family and friends and engage in social activities.
Health and Safety Monitoring
- Monitor health status: Observe and report any changes in the client's health, behavior, or physical condition.
- Assist with mobility aids: Ensuring the proper use of wheelchairs, walkers, lifts, or other mobility devices. Training is provided as needed.
- Ensure a safe living environment: Keeping the home free from safety hazards and ensuring the client is comfortable and secure.
Documenting and Reporting
- Maintain daily logs: Document the care provided, meals served, medication taken, and any changes in the client's condition after each shift.
- Report concerns: Notifying the management team of any concerns, incidents, or significant changes in the client's health or well-being.
- Submission of timesheets: Complete and submit weekly timesheets to account for hours worked, expenses (including receipts), and mileage incurred.
Emotional and Mental Health Support
- Provide emotional support: Listen to the client's concerns, offer encouragement, and create a safe space that provides security and comfort.
- Promote independence: To maintain a sense of independence, encourage the client to provide input in decisions that affect them and give them time to do so. Choice and control are essential for maintaining existing skills.
- Monitor mental health: Noticing signs of mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety and reporting them to management.
