Job description

Are you interested in a new and challenging opportunity? We are seeking a Hoisting and Rigging Engineering Specialist to execute moderately complex technical work under general guidance. Do you have experience in documenting, forecasting, analyzing investigating and interpreting moderately complex results and providing recommendations? Do you see yourself coordinating and facilitating the transfer of information to inform decision making while complying with quality assurance standards and troubleshooting when issues arise? What you will be doing!
  • Using the structure of CNL’s Engineering Change Control procedure, create hoisting and rigging plans for nuclear and non-nuclear lifts at CRL.
  • Investigating, defining, and documenting design requirements.
  • Creating written design deliverables. Delegating and overseeing creation of drawings.
  • Providing technical support to field work, then close out job.
  • Reviewing and providing input to Hoisting and Rigging plans produced by others.
  • Reviewing planning packages for conformance to design, applicable standards and industry best practice.
  • Providing feedback to planners.
  • Providing technical support to field work.
  • Subject matter expert review and update to CNL’s hoisting and rigging standards.
  • Keeping current with industry codes and best practices.
  • Updating CNL hoisting and rigging standards to reflect latest industry codes and best practices.
  • Monitoring training records, and ensure proper training for staff working on hoisting and rigging.
  • Investigating and reporting on system failures and emergent events.
  • Travelling to field, researching drawings and analyzing laboratory results to determine and report nature and causes of failure.
  • Developing and document plans for resolutions.
  • Providing follow-up support to implement recommendations.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • At minimum, a Bachelors (Honour) in mechanical or chemical Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
    • Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a professional engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Experience
    • Minimum three (3) years mechanical engineering experience in a highly regulated nuclear or industrial setting.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to use a computer with typical office software and some specialty programs for accessing CNL-specific information.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings.
    • Ability to perform typical calculations for hoisting and rigging design and analysis.
    • Understands the function of hoisting and rigging systems and components found in industrial settings.
    • Understands industry regulations, codes, standards and quality assurance for hoisting and rigging in nuclear and industrial settings.
    • Understands Mechanical safety standards applicable to Canadian and Ontario hoisting and rigging applications and Canadian nuclear facilities.
  • Security clearance eligibility required:
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Location of Work

This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
