Position overview

Position title: Pre-six Lecturer in History of Art and Visual Culture

Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,531-$9,602 (based on salary points 1-5). Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from those taught during the academic year.

Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.

Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and funding availability. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in fall quarter 2024 through fall quarter 2025. Appointments outside this period require an alternative open recruitment.

Position duration: Typically during one or more quarters of the academic year (fall, winter, spring), or during Summer Session.

The Department of History of Art and Visual Culture at UCSC invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers to teach during the academic year or Summer Session. We seek candidates with experience teaching historic or contemporary visual cultures, including regions such as Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, the Mediterranean, Native Americas, and Oceania.

We value candidates with strong knowledge of visual materials and an interest in examining these within cultural and historical contexts. Contributions to diversity and excellence through teaching are especially encouraged.

Internal candidates will be given priority consideration.

Qualifications

  • M.A. or MFA in art history/visual culture or relevant field (e.g., media studies, communication); M. Arch. or equivalent foreign degrees considered.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level.
