Reporting to the Foreman, the Highway Maintenance Worker Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various types of heavy equipment used in highway maintenance. This position plays a key role in maintaining highways, ensuring the functionality and safety of roadways.

How You’ll Add Value
  • Actively contribute to the safety culture, promoting a safe and productive work environment
  • Maintain, service, and inspect company equipment, vehicles, and facilities, ensuring proper care and security
  • Follow labour laws, company policies, safety regulations, and environmental/OH&S compliance
  • Understand and apply Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) standards for highway maintenance, road safety, and hazard assessments
  • Ensure proper signage, traffic control measures, and emergency response for weather events, accidents, and wildlife hazards
  • Operate and learn various heavy equipment for snow/ice control, roadside, and highway maintenance
  • Maintain well-stocked maintenance facilities and complete necessary documentation, including logs, reports, and safety records
  • Safely transport hazardous materials and manage traffic in high-volume work zones and emergency situations
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions
  • Reside within 30 minutes driving distance of the assigned shop
  • Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on light, medium, and heavy equipment is considered an asset
  • Experience in snowplow operations is considered an asset
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions
  • Flexible schedule for on-call shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays

About Volker Stevin Highways

Our story begins in 1996 with the privatization of Highway Maintenance in the Province of Alberta. We started our operations in Southern Alberta, and have maintained the roads, and bridges in the Lethbridge Contract Maintenance Areas ever since. In 2001, we assumed responsibility for the Calgary area, and further expanded our operations in 2016 with the 30-year maintenance contract of the North East section of the Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton. In August 2019 we added all of Mountain View County and Clearwater County to our areas and currently maintain approximately 30% of the provincial road network (~ 18,500 lane km’s). Over 200 plow trucks, and more than 350 people, work all year round to provide safe roads and bridges to the travelling public in Alberta.
