King David staff members enjoy working in a warm, collegial environment where we collaborate to ensure our students reach their potential. King David nurtures a Jewish culture characterized by a shared tradition, a common dedication to social justice, and a love for learning.

About the position:

We are looking for a dedicated, dynamic, compassionate, innovative, and inspiring counsellor to join our school family. A person with integrity, the successful candidate will have the ability to lead students, parents, and staff, and to collaborate while working hard and having fun. King David is a young and growing school with approximately 270 students and 50 staff members. We are looking for an educator who will thrive in a relational setting and, while working closely with our Counselling and Leadership Team, will support the emotional health of all in our community.

The successful candidate will have an excellent understanding of adolescent culture and pressures combined with a passion for teaching and making a difference in the lives of our students. You must value diversity as it relates to all people, including aspects of identity, and have respect for indigenous traditions and ways of knowing.

Role and Responsibilities:

The Counsellor will be part of the Counselling Team and will have an important voice in shaping what our school programs look like. It is our goal to care for our students’ emotional health. Aside from working collaboratively with colleagues, working with students and their families is a priority. The ideal candidate will have exemplary communication, organization, problem-solving, time management, and team-building skills that are embedded in a foundation built on care and empathy. They are self-directed and independent, and committed to shared decision-making in a small but complex school environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively, and will report to the Head of School or designate, and will have responsibilities that include (but not limited to):

  • Collaborate in planning and facilitating the school counselling program, including teaching and supporting students’ social and emotional learning (SEL)
  • Fostering caring, committed and supportive relationships with members of the school community that promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and care
  • Provide teaching sessions to students, parents, and teachers to support the emotional well-being of our school community, either in large or small groups, or individual sessions
  • Communicate with parents and staff, ensuring documentation and record keeping while ensuring and maintaining professional boundaries, including confidentiality
  • Support the overall well-being of all students through involvement in the school’s co-curricular programs
  • Be available outside the normal school day to respond to emergencies as may be necessary

Additional skills and attributes desirable in a candidate:

  • Thorough understanding of best practices in secondary education
  • Commitment to ensuring high standards of care and professional practice
  • Ability to inspire others through collaboration and team-building
  • Strong management skills, including the ability to prioritize and delegate
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Knowledge of Independent Schools is an asset

Requirements for the position:

  • Graduate-level training in Counselling Psychology or equivalent training or program
  • At least 2 years of experience working with adolescents
  • Teacher certification is preferred
  • At the time of application, you must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Why work at King David:

  • King David staff enjoy working in a warm, welcoming, modern, and collegial environment
  • Professional development is supported, both in and out of school, through conference attendance or course and workshop participation
  • We have a young, motivated, and engaged staff with an administration that is committed to creating a safe, positive work environment
  • We offer a comprehensive compensation package with competitive salaries, extended benefits, RRSP pension matching, and other perks
