Job description

HERBICIDE TECHNICIAN (PARKS OPS)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Statement of Job

Under regular supervision, coordinates and performs the application of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers in the maintenance of City grounds, athletic fields, parks, and open spaces. Maintains landscape materials in assigned areas and provides instruction and leadership to groundskeepers as assigned. Performs related work as required.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
  • Calculates and formulates pesticide mixtures. Applies fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Assists with the chemical budget.
  • Posts public notices before herbicide applications and performs recordkeeping functions.
  • Performs maintenance on equipment and maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Provides internal and external public service.
  • Applies fertilizer, herbicide, and pesticide to turf, ornamentals, streets, and sidewalks as necessary.
  • Assists in the application of aquatic herbicide to lakes, wetlands, and ponds. Completes all required paperwork.
Minimum Education and Training

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by 1-2 years of experience in landscape maintenance and/or chemical/spray applications, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess or obtain a fertilizer license within the first 6 months. Must hold a valid Florida driver's license and obtain FEMA 100, 200, and 700 Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of employment.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Skill Requirements:
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and policies related to herbicide application.
  • Ability to interpret regulations, procedures, and technical materials.
  • Knowledge of chemicals used for pest, weed, and plant disease control, and fertilizers.
  • Skill in operating lawn care machinery safely and effectively.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Understanding of safety precautions and emergency response.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports, analyze problems, and exercise independent judgment.
  • Effective communication and courteous interaction with co-workers and the public.
Physical Requirements

Must be physically capable of operating vehicles, tools, and equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks involving lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing, kneeling, and other physical activities.

Responsibilities

Maintains high standards of accuracy, quality, and communication. Completes work within deadlines, exercises judgment, and seeks advice when necessary.

Working Conditions

Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including exposure to hazards such as extreme temperatures, noise, dust, and chemicals.
