Job summary

University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto is seeking a Hemodialysis Assistant to support the Hemodialysis Unit, assist nurses, and help with dialysis machine setup and maintenance. This permanent full-time role involves patient transport, charting, and maintaining unit safety.

The position requires Grade 12, English proficiency, and flexibility to work shifts. Experience in patient care and dialysis is an asset. UHN offers competitive packages and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Ability to speak, read and write English.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Previous patient care experience is essential.
• Must be flexible to work any shifts.
• Medical/surgical experience is an asset.
• Hospital assistant experience is an asset.
• Dialysis assistant course or technical experience is an asset.
• CPR an asset.
• Heavy lifting is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Registered Nurse in patient care in the Hemodialysis Unit.
• Prime, dismantle and disinfect dialysis machines; set up and prime off-unit machines.
• Perform transportation duties via bed, walker and/or wheelchair.
• Dialysate sampling; stock unit and storage room with supplies.
• Assist patients with weighing, washroom trips, transfers and lifting.
• Adhere to safety measures and preventative maintenance; perform departmental duties.
• Document in patient charts and protect records from unauthorized access.
• Maintain cleanliness of the work area.
• Assist RN and/or patient with other duties as assigned.
• Perform other duties as required.

Duties

The principle responsibilities of the Hemodialysis Assistant include:

• Assisting the Registered Nurse in the care of patients in the Hemodialysis Unit
• Priming, dismantling and disinfecting of dialysis machines; set up and prime off unit machines;
• Performing transportation responsibilities via bed, walker and/or wheelchair
• Dialysate sampling; stocking the unit and storage room with supplies
• Assisting patients with weighing, washroom trips, transfers, heavy lifting, etc.
• Adhering to and performing routine safety measures and preventative maintenance; performing departmental duties
• Retrieving and documenting in patient’s chart in addition to protecting patient records/information from all unauthorized persons
• Ensuring general cleanliness of work area
• Assisting the Registered Nurse and/or patient with other duties as assigned
• Performing other duties consistent with the job classification as required.

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
• Ability to speak, read and write English
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Previous experience in assistance with patient care; direct or indirect patient care essential
• Must be flexible to work any of the possible shifts
• Previous medical/surgical experience an asset
• Previous experience as a hospital assistant an asset
• Technical experience or Dialysis Assistant course an asset
• CPR an asset
• Heavy lifting required
• May be required to work at multiple areas as well as rotating shifts in emergency situations
