Job description

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment with a capacity of more than three tons in a safe and appropriate manner. Is also responsible for cleaning, maintaining and securing all equipment as directed.

Because the Authority has a primary responsibility to serve the public 24 hours a day an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand, and may be required to accept overtime on short notice during emergency or unusual conditions and to perform essential work as assigned.

Responsibilities:
  • Operates several types of power equipment such as compressors, pumps, hoists, cranes, shovels and tractors in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Adjusts hand wheels and press pedals to drive machines and control attachments such as blades, buckets and swing booms.
  • Places warning signs, flags or lights in front and behind of trucks when equipment is parked on traveled thoroughfare for construction or maintenance purposes.
  • Performs daily safety and maintenance checks and participates in routine maintenance.
  • Advises supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.
  • Cleans all heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
  • Ensures that all heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of all traffic laws and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of truck and equipment safety requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
  • Ability to operate single axel trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to operate hydraulically controlled equipment.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a positive, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good verbal and listening communications skills.
  • Must demonstrate good work ethics.

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma, or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience operating a variety of heavy machinery.
