Norland is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer and Backhoe) in Delta, BC. The role requires operating dozers and backhoes on civil sites, with a unionized wage structure and access to extended healthcare and a pension plan.

The successful candidate will perform grading, material placement, and utilities trenching while following safety standards and site procedures. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are essential for daily commutes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating dozers and backhoes on civil construction sites.
  • Experience with underground utilities is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices and regulations.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation required.
  • Certifications such as First Aid, Ground Disturbance, Confined Space, Rigging & Hoisting are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently per procedures and regulations.
  • Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections; report defects.
  • Maintain a clean work area and support crew with labour tasks.
  • Follow directions from Foreperson and Superintendent to meet production and quality targets.
  • Communicate clearly with ground crews for safe operations.
  • Perform dozer grading, cutting, pushing, and compacting materials.
  • Backhoe excavation for utilities; load trucks safely and efficiently.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently according to company procedures and industry regulations.
  • Complete daily pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and support the crew with labour tasks as required.
  • Follow directions from the Foreperson and Superintendent to meet production and quality targets.
  • Communicate clearly with ground crews to ensure safe operations at all times.
  • Dozer -
  • Perform rough and fine grading to meet project specifications.
  • Cut, push, spread, and compact materials.
  • Support site preparation, road-building, backfilling, and embankment work.
  • Construct and maintain access roads, slopes, pads, and berms.
  • Operate using grade stakes, lasers, and/or GPS guidance when required.
  • Work around utilities and deep excavations with attention to safety and precision.
  • Backhoe-
  • Excavate trenches for deep utilities (storm, sanitary, water) in various soil conditions.
  • Load trucks efficiently and safely while minimizing spillage and wear on equipment.
  • Place pipe bedding, backfill, and compact materials as directed.
  • Perform fine excavation around existing utilities and sensitive infrastructure.
  • Work closely with the utility crew to ensure proper alignment, depth, and slope.
  • Handle materials, set structures, and support installation of underground infrastructure.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating dozers and backhoes on civil construction sites.
  • Experience with underground utilities is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices and regulations.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation required.
  • Certifications an asset: First Aid, Ground Disturbance, Confined Space, Rigging & Hoisting, etc.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with a positive, professional attitude.
  • Physically fit to perform all duties (ability to walk, stand, hear, and lift 50 lbs).
Compensation

This is a Unionized position with Norland - Operating Engineers 115. This position will earn Union wages and will have access to extended Union healthcare and benefits, a Union-sponsored pension plan, and additional training through the Training Plan. Expected hourly rate: Unionized wage range for this position is $46.43 +per hour (based on candidate’s experience), plus 10% vacation/statutory holiday pay. Total $51.07
