The Opportunity

Dartmouth Metals is seeking a self-motivated Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. Reporting to the Operations Manager and Office Manager, the operator will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining material handling or mobile shear equipment, ensuring compliance with our Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Responsibilities include operating various power equipment for lifting, moving materials, and cutting or shearing metal. The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of machinery, tools, and their maintenance.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)

  • Adhere strictly to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
  • Create a safe environment for employees, customers, and visitors.
  • Operate equipment for lifting, moving, or shearing loads by controlling levers, pedals, or dials.
  • Identify and avoid potential hazards or obstructions.
  • Inspect completed materials for defects and verify conformance to specifications.
  • Adjust machine speeds and actions using gauges and tools.
  • Align machinery with reference points and follow signals from crew members.
  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities based on signals.
  • Provide backup or assistance in the yard as needed.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Assist welders/mechanics with installing and aligning parts and perform general cleanup.
  • Report equipment deficiencies or malfunctions.
  • Perform daily inspections and maintenance on equipment.

Job Conditions

This role involves exposure to weather conditions and physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt typical of a scrap yard environment. Proper personal protective equipment must be worn at all times.

What you'll need

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator preferred.
  • Experience with loading sea containers is a plus.

Physical Activities Required

Ability to sit, stand, walk on uneven ground, lift up to 50 pounds, push, pull, crouch, bend, reach, twist, climb, and handle tools and materials with manual dexterity. Good visual and auditory acuity, along with mental alertness, are essential.
