The Apprentice Technician position at GFL Environmental offers on-the-job training in tasks such as performing inspections, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure the proper performance and safety of company vehicles. This role provides an opportunity to learn how to maintain commercial motor vehicles while participating in a provincial trade program and advancing your career.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance such as PM inspections, oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, tire rotations, and minor adjustments under supervision of a Licensed Technician
  • Complete record keeping related to repairs, parts usage, and repair times
  • Conduct vehicle maintenance inspections; identify, record, and report equipment condition
  • Assist licensed technicians with repairs and projects as assigned
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to safety procedures
  • Ensure shop equipment and tools are in safe operating condition
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with safety standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Provide own tools and willingness to acquire additional tools as needed
  • Currently registered in an apprenticeship program and in good standing

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of tools required for repairs and maintenance of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Ability to follow schedules, instructions, manuals, and guidelines
  • Experience with diagnostic software is preferred; must be computer literate and trainable in software systems
  • Effective communication skills across organizational levels and with external contacts
  • Self-starter capable of working independently or in a team
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

Working Conditions:

Work inside and outside in various weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, and other physical activities
  • Work around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery
  • Physically able to lift at least 50 pounds and push/pull up to 100 pounds
