Northern Airports and Marine Operations acts as the lifeline for remote communities in Northern Manitoba, allowing the transportation of medical patients and essential supplies such as food and medication. Marine Operations provides ferry services to the communities through a highly skilled workforce that adheres to regulatory standards to ensure safety and uniformity with provincial, federal, and international regulations.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba class 5F driver's licence without restrictions with the ability to upgrade to a class 3 within 12 months of hire with training provided.
- Must be able to work irregular hours and travel and work within the province of Manitoba by ground, water or air transportation and remain at remote work sites for extended periods.
- Must be able to handle physical requirements of the job and able to work in confined spaces, and perform work over/around the water.
- Must successfully complete the Marine Emergency Duties training within 12 months of hire with training provided.
- Must be Red seal certified in either Heavy Duty Equipment, Agriculture, or Truck Transport/Bus classifications. An apprentice in any of these classifications may also be considered.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Knowledge of the operation and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, be familiar with high pressure hydraulic systems, with the ability to trouble shoot and diagnose electric and hydraulic operating systems.
- Knowledge of Occupational, Safety, Health & Risk Management policies and procedures.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills including expereince producing clear and concise field notes, work sheets and/or reports.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal contacts and stakeholders (the general public, contractors etc.) to obtain, clarify, or provide facts or information.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
Desired:
- Experience with cutting and welding equipment.
- Experience in the maintenance and operation of passenger/vehicle ferries or other marine/airport equipment.
- Possession of Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association certification and experience with air conditioning systems.
- Possession of Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate.
Duties:
Under the supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent, this position is responsible to perform the daily maintenance, inspection, repair, and modification of Northern Airports & Marine Operations (NAMO’s) equipment, including but not limited to the following: passenger/vehicle ferries, front-end loaders, graders, snow blowers, truck plows, dump trucks, shore facilities, and related equipment.
The Heavy Duty Mechanic requires extensive interaction and cooperation with a diversity of internal and external contacts to ensure consistency in policy, standards, procedures, and Federal regulations to ensure that NAMO’s operations objectives are met.
