Job summary

CPKC in Northern Ontario is seeking a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic or Maintenance Technician to perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of heavy equipment used in rail operations. This position involves outdoor work and occasional field service travel, with a strong emphasis on safety and reliability.

You will inspect equipment, diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, plan tasks with a team, log work, and follow PPE requirements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience repairing heavy-duty equipment or as a maintenance technician.
  • Formal training in heavy equipment or commercial transport is required; HD license is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to read schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, or electronic issues; may involve disassembly/assembly.
  • Use manual, electric, and hydraulic tools; verify maintenance tasks and repairs.

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate work within a team setting.
  • Follow safety regulations and wear PPE in hazardous environments.
  • Maintain detailed logs of maintenance and parts used.
  • Ensure tools are maintained and operate heavy machinery as required.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Are you a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic or Maintenance Technician looking to take your career to the next level? As a valued member of the CPKC Work Equipment team, you’ll have the opportunity to work with advanced mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems essential to our rail operations. In this role, you’ll showcase your expertise by performing comprehensive preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues, and executing high-quality repairs on a wide range of heavy equipment and machinery. This role is ideal for individuals who are mechanically inclined, enjoy hands-on work in outdoor environments, and are open to occasional travel for field service assignments.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment, identifying and addressing potential problems before they cause failure
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, or electronic issues in machinery, which may involve disassembling, replacing parts, and reassembling equipment involved in changing ties and rails including machines, ballast regulators, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, tie cranes, tie inserters, etc.
  • Utilize manual, electric, and hydraulic tools, alongside welders and cutting torches, to perform and verify maintenance tasks and repairs
  • Investigate and diagnose equipment issues, taking swift corrective action to minimize downtime and production disruptions
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate work within a collaborative team setting
  • Follow all safety regulations and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), especially when working in potentially hazardous environments
  • Maintain detailed logs of all maintenance and repair work performed, including schedules and parts used.
  • Ensure all tools are maintained in optimal working condition and operate various types of heavy and specialized machinery as required
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or general equivalency
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience repairing heavy-duty equipment or as a maintenance technician
  • Completion of formal training in heavy equipment or commercial transport is required; possessing a heavy-duty equipment mechanic license is considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Well-versed in reading schematics and skilled in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems
  • Proficient in computer use, including maintaining data for repair work orders and working with various software applications
  • Solid foundational knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and welding principles is required, with opportunities for specialized expertise based on industry needs
