Job summary

The Calgary Airport Authority is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic to maintain and repair a fleet of airport equipment, including runway sweepers and snow removal units, to keep operations safe and efficient.

This full-time, on-site role requires 1–3 years of heavy-duty mechanic experience, Red Seal certification, AVOP eligibility, and a valid Class 5 driver's license. The position supports 24/7 operations, with shift work and safety testing as part of the hiring process.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years experience in heavy-duty mechanic field.
  • Red Seal qualification with government exam and practical experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain AVOP.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with current abstract.
  • Knowledge of diesel, gas, propane engines and electric drive motors.
  • Understanding hydraulic principles and systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose equipment faults using diagnostic equipment, gauges, and manuals.
  • Perform repairs and overhaul components on airport vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Follow maintenance procedures per manufacturers' schedules.
  • Do non-structural welding repairs when needed.
  • Fabricate specialized parts (pins, hubs, hydraulic lines).
  • Document all repairs and updated procedures.
  • May be required to operate AVOP and drive as part of duties.

WHAT'S THE TEAM LIKE

The Heavy Duty Mechanic plays a critical role in keeping the Calgary Airport's operations running safely and efficiently. This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of specialized airport equipment—including runway sweepers, snow removal units, and vegetation control machinery—ensuring all assets are reliable and ready for operation in a dynamic airfield environment.

Working both independently and as part of a team, the Heavy Duty Mechanic conducts inspections, diagnoses mechanical issues, and completes timely, high-quality repairs that minimize downtime and support uninterrupted airport operations. This position offers the opportunity to work with unique, purpose-built equipment while contributing directly to the safety and performance of one of Canada’s busiest airports.

This role operates on a shift schedule to support 24/7 airport operations.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Diagnose equipment faults using computerized diagnostic equipment, hydraulic flow meters, gauges, service manuals, and personal expertise
  • Perform repairs and overhaul components on all airport vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Implement maintenance procedures according to manufacturers and Calgary Airports service schedules
  • Perform non-structural welding repairs where necessary on a variety of metals
  • Fabricate specialized parts when necessary (ex. pins, hubs, hydraulic lines)
  • Document all repairs, updated processes, maintenance processes, and any updated procedures where applicable
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Airside Vehicle Operator's Permit (AVOP)
  • Red Seal Qualified including the completion of government exams and practical experience
  • 1 - 3 years experience in a heavy-duty mechanic field
  • As this position is considered safety-sensitive, candidates must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as part of the hiring process
  • This role includes driving as part of its duties; therefore, candidates will be required to provide a valid Class 5 driver's license and a current driver's abstract as part of the hiring process
  • Understanding of engines (diesel, gas, propane) as well as electric drive motors
  • Knowledge of hydraulic principles and systems
  • Problem solving abilities to address diagnostic and fabrication needs
