The Opportunity

The City of St. John’s is presently accepting applications for the Full-Time Permanent position of Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Full-Time Temporary position of Heavy Duty Equipment Apprentice, Fleet Services Division, Department of Public Works.

Interviews will be ongoing during the posting period as positions are available immediately.

Accountabilities

The incumbent will be required to perform all mechanical duties required in respect to the repair of heavy trucks / light duty trucks and equipment power systems such as engines, transmissions, final drives, steering, brakes, and rears, to include diagnosing hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems with diagnostic equipment and schematics.

The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School.
  • Must possess an Interprovincial Journeyperson Certificate in the field of Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic and must be in good standing and registered with the Department of Advanced Education and Skills, Province of Newfoundland. Consideration will also be given to applicants who are registered as an Apprentice in the above noted trades. Preference will be given to applicants in the fourth year of the Apprenticeship Program; however, applicants at earlier levels may also be considered.
  • A foreign diploma or certificate equal to the applicable Canadian credential will also be considered with the following documentation (to be submitted with application) :

An educational credential assessment (ECA) report from a recognized organization to show your credential is valid and equal to a Canadian credential. If you already have an ECA report, it must be less than 5 years old.

  • Language testing – Must have taken the approved language testing for Atlantic Immigration Program which is less than 2 years old and meets the level the program requires.
  • Valid work permit or other authorization to legally work in Canada.
  • Must possess at least five (5) years of experience involved with the repair of automobiles and heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to work safely and effectively around equipment, plus be able to detect safety hazards around the immediate work area, particularly where fellow workers are involved. The safe handling, use, and care of portable and stationary tools are also a requirement.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out verbal and written instructions accurately and quickly and to deal with people in a tactful, diplomatic manner.
  • Must have own tools and toolbox. Tools must include a selection capable for a Journeyperson or Apprentice to perform any type of a required function.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above duties.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's Licence.

Hours of Work

40 hours per week. Shift Work as required.

Hourly rate is $41.36 / hr (including base rate and applied market adjustment).

Apprentice compensation is based on percentage of the Journeyperson rate, as outlined below :

4th year apprentice – 90% of Journeyperson rate

3rd year apprentice – 85% of Journeyperson rate

2nd year apprentice – 80% of Journeyperson rate

1st year apprentice – 75% of Journeyperson rate.

Applicants must be members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 569, or should be prepared to join the Union immediately upon appointment.
