HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCHER

CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

The Safe Medical Care Research (SMC Research) department performs acquisition, abstraction, and capture of clinically oriented medical legal data. The department analyses and interprets the data to generate knowledge, and works collaboratively with the Safe Medical Care Learning department to undertake knowledge translation activities. The SMC Research department also responds to internal and external requests for data analysis. The department studies historical data to identify individual provider, team and system factors associated with medical-legal risk, researches trends, and evaluates the performance and impact of education programs. The department synthesizes evidence and disseminates its research findings by authoring reports, risk management and educational materials in collaboration with CMPA’s physician advisors, general legal counsel, and the Communications department.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Health Services Researcher is an integral part of the Evidence Synthesis Unit’s (ESU) research activities, collaboratively planning, executing, conducting and reporting novel research that supports Safe Medical Care in Canada. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the incumbent works closely with ESU and SMC Research team members, as well as other collaborators and stakeholders, both internal and external to the CMPA. The Health Services Researcher functions in a lead role: (i) collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders – both within and outside of the CMPA – to collect, synthesize and interpret data using rigorous qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches, and; (ii) translating evidence as part of a team that generates,disseminates and provides knowledge products and services, including research abstracts, reports, presentations and manuscripts for audiences within and outside of the CMPA.

Under the supervision of the ESU Manager, the Health Services Researcher ensures health evidence isproduced and reported using methodological rigour, accuracy, timeliness and relevance to both CMPA members and the broader healthcare community – key factors in maintaining the CMPA’s status as a leader in advancing Safe Medical Care.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

EVIDENCE GENERATION& SYNTHESIS

  • Works with ESU and SMC Research management, team members and stakeholders to collaboratively:
    • establish researchpurpose, objectives and scope
    • identify, prioritize, select, refine and operationalize research questions
  • Drafts, develops and executes primary and secondary research protocols in collaboration with project team members, including incorporation of comments and feedback from management and co-authors
  • Conducts data analysis and evidence synthesis using current methodologies and techniques
  • Coordinates internal and external experts to develop methods and interpret results
  • Contributes to project management documentation concerning studies, including resources and timelines
  • Makes use of best research methods and practices, and participates in the investigation and application of new research methods as appropriate and necessary

KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION

  • Leads and supports the preparation of manuscripts for peer review (as lead author or co-author) and abstract submissions of research findings for submission to conferences and meetings
  • Leverages available tools and guidelines to inform reporting and presentation of research findings
  • Liaises with the ESU Manager, project team members and co-authors to ensure content is robust, high-quality and aligns with corporate strategic objectives
  • Prepares reports of data analysis and evidence synthesis for SMC Research management review and contributes to communication and knowledge translation strategies – in collaboration with Communications and SMC Learning that engage both internal and external audiences

RESEARCH SUPPORT

  • Provides support and assistance to ESU and SMC Research project team members as necessary and/or assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Master's degree in health sciences, ideally Epidemiology, Public and/or Population Health
  • A minimum of 8 years of clinical epidemiological and/or health services research experience
  • Experience planning, conducting and leading health research studies, such as systematic reviews and research surveys using quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods approaches
  • Experience writing scientific manuscripts and reports as a lead author.
  • Significant experience with the conduct of systematic and other reviews, including critical appraisal
  • Experience with patient safety and/or QI research is an asset
  • Familiarity with major Canadian health administrative databases (e.g., OHIP, DAD, NACRS) and/or patient registries is an asset

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bilingualism (English and French) an asset.
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate and work effectively with stakeholders, both internal and external to the CMPA, including physicians, senior managers and investigators. Ability to identify needs and investigate solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively in a group setting or one-on-one and to explain complex concepts clearly, including experience presenting research findings
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent judgment, time management and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities at once and prioritize work in a busy environment
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to lead projects and project teams.
  • Ability to exercise judgement and make decisions while working with minimal supervision

POSTING DETAILS

  • Job type: This is a regular full-time opportunity.
  • Salary range: $100,400 - $134,300– this role is classified as a level 9
  • Location:Hybrid - Primary Remote Job. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake.
