Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The role involves continuous quality and safety improvements in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Health Services for Community Living (HSCL) Nurse develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates health services for adult clients with developmental disabilities across various settings, aligned with VIHA's mission and vision. The nurse utilizes clinical knowledge and expertise to serve as a resource, providing consultation and training to nurses, physicians, program teams, service providers, and caregivers regarding care and treatment. The nurse also advises caregivers, delegates nursing tasks, conducts client assessments, and educates service providers and staff through group and individual health education sessions. Direct client care, teaching, and problem-solving are integral components of the role.

Travel is required for this position, and transportation arrangements must meet VIHA's operational needs, which may include using a personal vehicle.

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN.
  • Graduation from a recognized nursing program or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • At least three years of recent, relevant experience, including two years in community settings with adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of current theories, practices, and legislation related to caring for developmentally disabled individuals, and child/adult education principles.

  • Ability to apply nursing processes as per BC College of Nurses and Midwives standards.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competence in information gathering and resource seeking.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Conflict resolution, problem-solving, and consensus-building abilities.
  • Sound judgment, assessment skills, tact, and empathy.
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Planning, organizing, prioritizing, and evaluating client care.
  • Capability to intervene effectively in crises or difficult situations.
  • Experience in developing educational strategies and teaching using adult education principles.
  • Effective interaction with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to promote positive public relations.
  • Proficiency in operating related equipment, including computers.
