Qualifications

POSITION BACKGROUND:

The Health & Safety Advisor in Fort McMurray provides specialized advice and guidance to company employees to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and legislation. This position requires that the Safety Advisor handles all day-to-day safety issues that arise in Ketek buildings, yards and job sites.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Monitor and evaluate the health and safety program to ensure compliance with applicable legislation
  • Coordinate unplanned event investigations and ensure effective underlying cause analysis & corrective actions are properly implemented
  • Enforce programs and mentor individuals / groups in relation to subject matter expertise
  • Perform worksite inspections
  • Support the emergency preparedness process and assist with training exercises
  • Handle clients’ safety requests and requirements
  • Review Hazard Assessments, Near Misses, Hazard Identifications and other proactive reports. Prepare and present findings to management.
  • Mentor/educate site personnel regarding safe work practices/habits
  • Assist with hazard assessments and safety meetings
  • Assist with Project Safety Plans
  • Audit clients/contractors against applicable legislation and their safety programs

Other Duties

  • Assist with training and the implementation of safety initiatives
  • Support, coach and mentor the Health & Safety Committee members
  • Provide a safety analysis and status reports, when applicable
  • Promote a culture of safety excellence
  • Observe & enforce safety procedures and use of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Be considerate of the needs of our community and protection of the environment
  • Represent Ketek in a light that is commensurate with the values of Management, the Corporate Vision and company Mission Statement

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Required

  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a safety officer or advisor
  • Minimum 5 years’ oilfield, oilsands, mining services and/or water transfer experience
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and clean driver’s abstract
  • Fluent in the English language (reading, written, spoken)
  • Able to communicate with clients / public in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner
  • Able to handle multiple tasks and frequent demanding deadlines
  • Able to handle changing schedules and priorities, with high level prioritization skills
  • Strong work ethic and organizational planning skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills

Preferred

  • OH&S certification
  • Knowledgeable in Alberta & Saskatchewan OH&S Legislation
  • Experience in facilitating safety training
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Proficient with computers, including Google Workspace & Microsoft

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands

  • Must work outside in all weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat
  • May at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances
  • Must take necessary precautions to protect yourself with applicable controls
  • May be required to work around heavy-duty equipment
  • Regularly required to stand/sit, stoop, and kneel
  • Must be able to competently operate computers, phones and digital programs
  • Must be able to drive a company truck safely and confidently

Work Environment

  • Field environment (70%), office environment (15%), and shop/yard environment (15%)
  • May be required to work some weekends or outside of regular office hours
  • Pre-Access drug and alcohol testing required for most Client site visits
