Job summary

Shared Health's Selkirk Mental Health Centre seeks a Health Care Aide (HCA) to provide direct patient care and support activities of daily living. You will help promote independence and assist in goal attainment while following care plans and safety procedures.

Under the supervision of the Manager Health Services, you will work in a dynamic team, adapting to shift rotations including days, nights and weekends. A Health Care Aide certificate is required.

Qualifications

• Experience in mental health care preferred.
• Proficient English communication, both written and spoken.
• Knowledge of PHIA, WHMIS and safety requirements.
• Understanding of Indigenous customs and values preferred.
• Ability to prioritize care and manage multiple demands.

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager Health Services, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to patients within the Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC); assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), supporting independence and patient goal acquisition. The HCA demonstrates commitment to the mission, vision and values of SMHC while adhering to standards of care, policies and procedures.

Experience

• Experience providing care to individuals in a mental health setting, or with physical and cognitive impairments is preferred

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

• Minimum Grade 10
• Successful completion of recognized Health Care Aide course required

• Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

• Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices and other relevant Workplace Safety and Health requirements/responsibilities
• Knowledge of Indigenous customs, traditions and values is preferred

Physical Requirements

• Moderate to heavy physical effort required. Involves physical activities such as standing, transferring, and transporting patients/residents and equipment
• Requires shift work and will include evening, night or weekend shifts, or extended working hours as required
• May encounter aggressive and/or agitated individuals

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
