The Health Care Aide (HCA) is a member of the interdisciplinary health care team responsible for providing direct care to assist in activities of daily living, comfort, and safety of patients. HCAs support overall care in their assigned areas under supervision of Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), or other regulated healthcare professionals, following their supervision guidelines. The required skills are acquired through education based on the Provincial Curriculum for Health Care Aides or equivalent. Responsibilities and scope of practice are determined by legislation, employer needs, care setting, and individual skills. Unit 68 is a busy 52-bed Medical/Surgical Unit with General Surgery and Family Medicine patients.
As an HCA, you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance and support activities of daily living to patients (clients, residents) requiring short-term or ongoing support, according to care plans and policies. You will assist nurses by supporting hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs, help organize activities, and observe/report on patient health and mood. You will help maintain a safe environment and ensure effective communication with patients and healthcare professionals.
